Many of you know that I am huge vinyl collector, and for years I primarily focussed on used, vintage discs. Lately, however, I've been really immersing myself in the new vinyl offerings and re-issues, and it's been great to acquire this stuff and build my library with new quality releases.

I started collecting as a kid, and I have some very fond memories of taking my paper route money and buying records at the Kelly's weekend album sales. This was very much a ritual, and where it all began for me.

I had a bit of an epiphany the other day, but as a nearly 50 year old person, I realized that I had just unwittingly re-lived a fun day from my youth: I went to the mall, bought myself lunch at the food court, did some shopping, bought a bag full of records at a department store, and then rushed home to listen to them. It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The whole experience was very nostalgic.

Anyway, to the topic: what new vinyl did I buy? I walked into a Department Store called London Drugs, and they were very early supporters of the vinyl resurgence, and have a decent vinyl section to shop from. For this reason I try to support their efforts and commitment to the medium. We flipped around the racks for about an hour, and my wife and I bought 4 records:

    1) Jimi Hendrix: People, Hell and Angels - 2 disc (200 grams)

    2) Vince Guarldi - Peanuts Christmas

    3) Sarah McLachlan: Shine On - 2 disc (180 grams)

    4) Diana Krall: Christmas Songs.

All for $83 including tax, which seemed pretty fair, given the quality of some of these pressings. The Hendrix set is fantastic and has a nice booklet too. Of course, I've bought much more than this in the last little while, but this was our most recent acquisition. So, what new vinyl have you bought lately, while enjoying the amazing resurgence of this beloved format?

Rise and Fall of Paramount Records Vol 2. Given its price tag, that's going to be my last new vinyl purchase for a bit.

Buy the mono box. I hard headedly refused to buy another Beatles box. I thought I would get Revolver and Rubber Soul and call it good. They were so good I got Pepper and White. They were so good...etc,etc. I now have them all but M.M. Tour (and that one is under the tree).

Matador Records (Yo La Tengo's label) used to use RTI as their pressing plant, and their records were always glorious. Sadly, a few years ago they switched to United (probably to save a few bucks) and the quality has gone downwards. :thumbsdow

  17. I'd love for you to give us your impressions of the new Sarah McLachlan 2LP set. I have yet to pick it up and want to as I have every other title that was reissued on Classic Records and a few on Nettwerk.

Coming home with a new, sealed album nowadays is more of a religious experience than it's ever been. I'm 56 and still own most of my initial Lp purchases from the very early seventies-all in pristine condition (and that includes the covers).

Back then, buying a new "album" was something we took for granted; albums were "always there" and, as far as we were concerned, would ALWAYS "be there". And of course there was the vinyl quality. Nowadays, playing a new album for the first time is like undergoing a test at the edge of your seat: how quiet will the vinyl be...will the hole be centered...will there be any skips or excessive pops and crackles...if the "listening experience" even remotely pases these criteria, you can be satisfied that you came home with a "good copy" of an album you love.

    My four most recent purchases:

Willy and the Poorboys by CCR (mastered, incidentally by our host)
The newly issued Beatles '62-'66 and '67-70
    ..and LOVE, The Beatles.

Very good. If you like Sarah, you will like this a lot. Great songs, remisvent of Surfacing, and much better drumming. A must for a Sarah fan. A good 7.5/10.

Great lists guys. Feel free to share your nostalgic experiences and why vinyl is special to you, like I did. Or any comments that you have on the product or music itself.
