A couple of favorites come to mind, both vocalists: Shirley Horn (who also played piano wonderfully) and Leon Thomas.

Maynard Ferguson. Today, almost a decade after his passing, a casual fan, if they remember, might remember "Gonna Fly Now" or another of the cheesy 70s things at Columbia. But his days with Stan Kenton were awesome...his days at Vik had some awesome charts...his work for Roulette stellar. His first few for Columbia great...and his last few Concord dates were awesome.

But he may likely be remembered only for the commercial, cheesy stuff. And, sadly, his records are slipping back into the world of out of print.

More forgotten than underrated: Dodo Marmarosa.

  6. Hadn't heard of him, but just picked up the Complete Blue Note Recordings box set based on this.

My guess would be Vince Guaraldi because of his association with Peanuts.

Red Garland is very famous though... and he won lots of recording dates.

As you probably know now, he has a little Monk in him. They new each other so not a big surprise. However he doesn't really sound like Monk. It's just a phrase here or a note there. If you like jazz piano of the Fifties, you'll love it. Even if it doesn't grab you right away don't be disappointed or worry. Given time, it will come.

He has some music on Bethlehem too but you have almost all of his recorded work. Shame he never got to work with a bigger band. Also, to hear what it would sound like, possibly, check out the Herbie Nichols Project with Frank Kimbrough. Recommended but no vinyl afaik.

I'll agree, too, that Herbie Nichols was a wonderful musician.

There's a real nice two-book edition of Galbraiths solo arrangements of various standard tunes. It was compiled by one of his former students, i think. In addition to the songs it also contains Barry's biography, a CD of the tunes, a nice letter from Jim Hall and a discography which is about two pages long. Well, almost. But he was really in demand in NY studios. The arrangements are great, well worth checking out if one's a guitarist.

I would add Gerald Wilson. I knew nothing about him, and recently picked up teh Mosaic Box on a recommendation, and he's fantastic. I'd also add Oliver Nelson as a player, not just an arranger.

Joy Bryan, wonderful jazz singer. Only recorded two albums (on Mode and Contemporary), all these recordings are available on a Fresh Sound CD. I wish I could find out more about her, haven't been able to find anything. She's more unknown than underrated I guess.

  22. One of the jazz musicians I've been listening a lot to recently is trumpet player Ingrid Jensen. Of the albums she plays on, these are the ones I like best (in chronological order):

    Ingrid Jensen - Higher Grounds
    Virginia Mayhew - Phantoms
    Ingrid Jensen - At Sea
Maria Schneider Orchestra - Sky Blue
    Christine Jensen - Treelines
Whitney James - The Nature Of Love
    Nordic Connect - Spirals
    Karin Hammar - Land
Marianne Trudel Trio - La Vie Commence Ici

E.S.T. did have a lot of success by jazz standards ( I never understood why, for me they were overrated).

Jaki Byard, Ted Curson, Billy Harper (one of the most beautiful tenor sounds), are the first names of underrated jazz musicians that come to my mind, but as said before, there are countless of them.

These were the first two that came to mind for me. Both of these guys are tremendous.
