I went from a VPI Scout/Shelter 501 to a VPI Classic I/Soundsmith Zephyr II in March and almost completely stopped listening to my digital music...so now I'm about to buy my first real DAC, most likely a Marantz HD-DAC1.

The most significant change to my system in 2014 was that I finally chose to be content with what I have, stop hankering after upgrades and just concentrate on listening to music. Come to think of it, that may well be the most significant change to my system ever - and one of the best, too.

Generally, the RP6 was a solid step up for me: more detail, better speed stability. The TT-PSU that comes standard with the RP6 is great even just functionally. No more removing the platter to change from 33 to 45 and back.

Finally utilized the DSD DAC in my Oppo BDP-105D. Connected a tiny little Asus VivPC up and added Hi-Res downloads to the arsenal!

Changed from a Sutherland Ph3D phono stage to a Manley Chinook - this made a big change in my system, though the Sutherland is still quite a value at its asking price. :righton:

Added a vintage Yamaha M-80 Amp to go with the Yamaha C-80 Preamp I was using as a phono stage. Had them both looked over for weakness and repaired by a reliable tech and am happily running them as my stereo rig. It's not a tube amp but it does sound nice to my ears. :righton:

Another big change is that I'm building things now that are part of my system.

I built my headphone amp. I first built it stock (it was a kit) and then have made at least a half dozen modifications.

I also built a line level switch box (4 inputs, 1 output) from scratch. Came out great.

I've also made 4 sets of interconnects and 2 power cords.

I will be building another power cord soon and have more mods on my headphone amp "to do" list.

I'm finding this DIY stuff very rewarding and cost effective (as long as you have a good idea of what you're doing).

If you are handy I urge everyone to try a diy project-

Adding my living room system. I installed a McIntosh MA 5100 integrated amplifier I acquired, my old HH Scott 312D FM tuner, my Technics SP-25/Audio-Technica ATP 16-T tonearm/custom plinth and various cartridges, and topped it off with a pair of Klipsch Chorus with Crites titanium tweeter elements and Crites crossover rebuilds.

I've heard good things about these - how are these working for you?

It's a tie between upgrading from the PS Audio PWD Mark 2 to the PS Audio DirectStream, and upgrading from the PS Audio Power Plant Premier to the Power Plant P5. Both have jolted the sound quality up.

Read good reviews and pleased so far. I needed new speakers like a whole in the head but they were offering a good deal and went for them. I was looking for "smaller" speakers for a den/study and had size restrictions. They are on the big side for bookshelf but the height fit by about 0.005" :).
The cabinites are beautiful, base is distinctive & no plans to return.

Hmm, I think I've had a pretty big year:

First, I bought a secondhand pair of DeVore Fidelity Orangutan O/93 speakers and sold my DeVore Fidelity 3XL speakers.
Then, I bought a Dynavector XX2 and sold my EMT TSD-15.
Next, I sold my Well Tempered Amadeus GTA and purchased a secondhand Rega P9
Finally I bought a Thorens TD-124, which I'm currently having rebuilt, along with a new Thomas Schick 9" tonearm, that I should receive sometime in February.

What's in store for the new year? Well, I'm going for a Zu Denon 103, Yamamoto HS-1 Ebony headshell, then eventually moving up to a Line Magnetic 518 integrated amp and potentially the Auditorium 23 Denon SUT and AcousticPlan Phonomaster phono stage (have to find somewhere to demo that). That should keep me entertained until I reach a higher tax bracket and can get into some Shindo gear.

Yeah, I'd say so ... ! Assuming your system was <$28,000 (MSRP) before ... good for you!
