Honestly, why would anyone want forty thousand songs in their pocket?

You mean Gumby? How've you been buddy? I know to some people on here you can come across as a rude, narcissistic know-it-all, but I want to thank you for changing my life. I took your advice and started using iTunes. I've been downloading music everyday. The best part about downloading is I don't have the physical artwork, no LP jackets or CD booklets to get creased or damaged. You would be proud of me, even bought some skinny jeans.

I doubt I could name 40,000 songs that I like and would want to hear repeatedly. Two or three thousand, probably.

I'd certainly love to have my entire music collection with me at all times. I can't understand why someone wouldn't.

I am of the same opinion. I'm not interested in trying to keep my collection in one spot. Technology is great but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

MP3's in my pocket does not equal my collection. Not even close!

The idea isn't to have 40,000 songs that you know you would want to hear repeatedly. The idea is to have 40,000 songs that you might want to hear once, or maybe more, or maybe never, depending on your mood, the setting and other circumstances. There's that damn convenience again.

I think I can summarize it for you:
    • Doesn't equal collection
    • Devalues the music and listener
    • Skinny Jeans
    • Can't even think of 40,oo0 titles
    • I'm more focused than you
    • Unnecessary
    • Hard drives are fragile
    • Vinyl is organic
    • You can't autograph an mp3
    • Ten CDs are plenty
    • Tubes sound better than digital
    • Need to pay attention when away from home
    • Sheeple / Corporations
    • It's sad
    • You can open CDs, read booklet
    • Cassette walkmans, portable CD players still work fine
    • Earbuds sound bad
    • Mp3 listeners think they're cool - want no part of that
    • Used CDs are very cheap now

I guess the question: is why wouldn't I? For walking, exercising, and doing other things, the iPod beats the hell out of the Sony Discman or whatever it was called.

I guess I'm an oddity in that I'm 48 and used to absolutely despise the mp3 and was a hardcore advocate of having the physical media in hand. I still collect CDs, LPs, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let the idea that digital media is *baaaad* stop me from listening to something (or purchasing it, for that matter) if that is what is available.

Somewhere I turned a corner and said: 'F**k it, the music is more important than the media, the sound, or whatever. Here's a stunner: get this: sometimes, yep, sometimes (being a lot) I *gasp* listen to 192kps digital files on my 5th Generation iPod Classic while I *walk* and I use Bose *earbuds* while I do it. Earbuds are awesome because they're light and they don't mess up my hair !

Well said.... !!!!! You win the best post on this thread award.

Too bad so many narrow minds think that having an iPod or similar is a replacement for their music collection... It is NOT... It is in addition to one's music collection as another way to and NOT instead of the way one currently listens to their music.

Can't see a single item in your list that is remotely relevant to use as an argument against those who find it a good thing to have (a copy of*) their music collection with them when on the move.

    *For the pedantic amongst you.

You guys realize he was simply compiling a list of arguments that the anti-digital collection people have come up with against having 40,000 songs in your pocket, right?

It's interesting that the most vociferous posters on this thread don't really care about whatever they are trying to say.

Got a laugh out of some of them, but actually agreed with some of the others. MP3's are not my collection, as I've stated repeatedly. Neither is a stream. Maybe it is for you and others but that's not an absolute for all of us, my friend.

  18. So lets see... the arguments for having a loaded iPod or other digital device on your person: Convenience and the ability to play any song you are in the mood to listen to at the time you want to hear it. The arguments against: I can't really tell from reading the posts, some people seem offended by the very idea of digital music and can't wrap their heads around the fact that for about 99% of the population 320 kbps (VPN) sounds about exactly the same as the cd track it was ripped from.

I think the real point I'm getting here is that it must not be both: you must choose one (massive physical library) or the other (portable device).
