My DDS.PRO transport died and I want to replace it with pc-based / compatible audio playback components. The problem is I’m not PC savvy or familiar with the current software formats and need advice to steer me in the right direction.

    Other than the digital front-end I’ll be replacing here’s my system: Silverline Sonatina>Moth Audio s45 SET>Shunyata Hydra PLC>Shunyata PC>Grover UR7 IC>DIY 24awg (5n) 99.999% pure silver / 20awg teflon 10' speaker “cables”.

My 2 watt triode amp is driving a 92db / three-way / dynamic speaker that employ two 6” woofers. If memory serves my current dac is set to 1.6v output and drove these speakers in a much larger room then I’m using now. I’m hoping the enhanced dynamic range in the new components will not force me to peg the volume pot on my amp.

    And here’s the upgrade path I’m eye-ballin’…

    · iPod Touch 64g>
    · Air Port Express>
    · iFi Micro iUSB PS>
    · iFi Micro iDSD DAC

I would send lossless files through the digital fiber optic out on the Airport Express to the DAC in direct mode, by-passing the analog section of the iDSD. Then use the line out on the DAC to my amp which has an Alps volume control pot. Since this is not a headgear-based system I would be using the DAC in Eco [2.0v] power mode. I’m assuming the Air Port Express would allow me to use the iPod Touch as my hand held remote “server”/ jukebox. I also need the camera connection kit [CCK] but not sure where it goes in the chain and what effect it has on my usage of the iPod as hand held remote.

I would still have the whole software issue to navigate but wanted to get the hardware component together 1st and then progressively explore higher-rez files / formats. While the iFi Micro products are intended for ‘phones it’s my understanding it’s been partnered with high-end speaker systems. I want to ensure what I'm considering is suitable with my existing system while addressing my current requirements and provides an upgrade path into the not too distant future.

AirPlay will support streaming from your iPod or Mac but it is limited to 16/44:

If you want to play hi-res you'll need to abandon AirPlay as well as the iPod as it is limited to 24/48:

iPad (not iPod) using the Camera Connection Kit you mentioned has been shown to support 24/96:

If you can make a digital link from your Mac to your DAC it will play whatever hi-res formats your DAC supports:

Your iPod can be used to control iTunes on the Mac using Apple Remote app:

The easiest way to be listening again is to buy the Airport Express and a mini-Toslink cable (assuming your existing DAC has optical input): about $100 on Amazon. Instructions are here:

You've been happy with CD so don't sweat the hi-res stuff. Hopefully, you ripped your CDs to iTunes in "Apple Lossless" format. If not, that gives you something to do after you get your music back.

If you're determined about hi-res, send me a PM with details about your current network and PC/music library setup and I'll try to help.
