  2. I was actually kind of surprised to learn he was still alive. I thought he'd probably died a while ago.

Joe was still active, hobnobbing with the stars and recording segments for WBBR radio in New York. Here he is pictured with Billy Crystal (who parodied Franklin during his run on SNL) last year.[IMG]

It may be a pretty tacky thought, but I always wondered who'd have to clean his office after he passed:

I grew up watching him on channel 9. He was one of a kind.

I love how he keeps saying Ray-mones even after the other guest says it the right way several times.

Finally, the healing can begin for Sarah Silverman.

That was always a bizzare show. Kind of a freak show. Lots of oddballs. I remember watching it late at night on Channel 9 and always thinking "What a bunch of weirdos!"

Even as a kid, he always looked old to me. And I never appreciated him.

Would like to see some of the guests he had on.

I betcha there's a treasure trove of stuff on that desk of his

That reminded me of an anecdote he related in one of his autobiographies whereby the great conductor Leopold Stokowski, guesting on his show, reamed him over the pronunciation of his surname: "It's 'Sto-KOFF-ski', not 'Sto-KOW-ski' - I am not a cow!"

From the early 1960's to the early '80's, the version of "Twelfth Street Rag" that opened his show (and also used on ad bumpers and closing credits) was that of "Big" Tiny Little, from his 1959 Brunswick album, Honky Tonk Piano:

I'm only familiar with him because of a book he wrote in the early to mid-'60s, called "Classics of the Silent Screen". I still have it. What a long and, I would guess, varied career!
