You didn't have to choose but glad you did. ;)

The Smiths; misery should be leavened with a little humor.

Not choosing. But The Cure of I had to. Then again it would be The Cure no matter who you put up against them.

Smiths. The Cure's consistent borrowing of every move Joy Division/New Order made undermines their stuff for me.

I love both but have to vote for the Smiths. Dry wit and melodic hooks win me over every time. This is not to disparage the Cure at all who have made some of my very favourite music but the Smiths were pretty much perfect IMO! This one was one of the toughest polls!

The Smiths because they knew when to stop. And because Morrissey has a better voice than that of Robert Smith which is - despite of loving The Cure for many years - still an acquired taste to me.

Truer than you know. I saw the Cure at Pitchfork last year and they hardly managed a dozen songs in two and a half hours. Waved gladioli would have made it more bearable.

Find no appeal whatsoever with The Smiths; Cure did some interesting stuff during their first years at least.

Love both. But what the Smiths produced in just 5 years gives them my vote.

If Morrissey & Marr had not split I believe they would have become as popular as REM became in the early 1990s.

The Smiths for consistency across their output, but The Cure for specific albums (Kiss Me, Disintegration etc).

    The Smiths.
This is actually the easiest poll ever for me. I don't own anything by The Cure, but I love Ben Folds' cover of Inbetween Days and Smashing Pumpkins' version of A Night Like This.

The Cure, no question about it. They were an important part of my youth, whereas The Smiths only appeared on the scene after I had lost much of my interest in trying to keep up with contemporary music, so I never really got round to checking them out properly.

We did this poll a few years back - the OP should check the archives and ask a moderator to merge the threads.

I like the Cure a lot, especially the first 4 albums, but in terms of originality, creativity, consistency and just the wealth of amazing songs the Smiths are in a different league.

A Cure vs Bunnymen poll would be a better contest. Or Cure vs New Order.

Like them both, but The Cure has more albums I listen to back to back. "Pornogrophy", "Head On The Door", "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" & "Disintigration" are all 5 star albums in my book. Love the singles released by The Smiths though.

For me Definitely The Cure .

One of my favorite bands, The Cure music touches Me in tremendous emotional strength .

I especially love their New wave rock style which Combines guitar sounds with delicate and beautiful synth sounds , I like the melancholic atmosphere in their music , albums like Faith , Pornography , Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Disintegration are masterpieces that reflect this style, The head on the door is another big favorite.

    I do like and
    appreciate the Smiths

Sums it up for me, although I think seeing the Cure live is where it's at these days as RS is actually a very respectable guitar player and fun to watch when he's into it, and he usually is. Personally I wouldn't buy any new studio stuff by them though, unless it were somehow proven to rock.
I have the last Smiths lp Strangeways and Louder Than Bombs plus many nice recordings from the many other lps and 12" I have owned.
I have my Cure vinyl honed down to a similar situation, but I have more like 5 earlier titles and KMKMKM is where it ends.

If I speak from the heart, The Cure. I love The Smiths and they were brilliant, but I connect more emotionally to The Cure. Disintegration still takes me on a beautiful journey.
