Paul could've saved it for a spot on A Hard Day's Night. Would've been a wonderful filler (or 3rd single) song.

Sorry but I'd take John's demo over this any day.

George Harrison's Sour Milk Sea. Would have made a good rocker for the White Album. Would also have been a good fit on the Get Back project.

American Lovers would have been an excellent inclusion on Steely Dan's Pretzel Logic or Katy Lied if they hadn't decided to give it away. I'm not really sure how early it was written. They did do it live on the 2011 rarities night, but got the female backup singers to sing it. It would have been nice to hear Donald attempt it.

Somehow I knew this was gonna be a Beatles theme in disguise.

Ok, the Boss giving Blinded by the Light to Manfred Mann.

Bruce didn't give the song to Mann - MMEB covered "Blinded" 3 years after Bruce released it.

Bruce gave away songs - "Because the Night", "Fire", etc. - but he kept "Blinded" for himself!

Burt Bacharach wrote some good songs, though I think the artists he wrote these for did a good job with them.

I thought Manfred Mann's Earth Band did 'Blinded By The Light?'

As for 'Because The Night,' the 10,000 Maniacs one is my favorite.

Yes you did say that, I misunderstood because it also says he kept that one for himself. As for 10,000 Maniacs "Because the Night", LOL.

The thread's about songs that artists gave to others to record but didn't record themselves - like McCartney's "Goodbye". He wrote it but he/Beatles didn't record it - he gave it to Mary Hopkin instead.

Bruce didn't "give away" "Blinded". The MMEB version was a cover - as I mentioned, Bruce recorded/released his version years before the MMEB cover.

So "Blinded" doesn't count for the thread because Bruce did keep it for himself - he simply got covered. Including "Blinded" in this thread would be like including the Joe Cocker version of "With a Little Help from My Friends"...

I think you'll find a Paul version of "Goodbye" DOES exist...

Another vote for "Sour Milk Sea." The mash-ups of the demo and the Lomax backing track prove how big of a missed opportunity that was.

Elvis Costello's I Love You When You Sleep is a great song, good melody, great back handed compliment lyrics. He gave it to Tracey, but then gutted the song and used some of the melody for a song on Goodbye Cruel World. That said, on that same Tracey album, there's some Paul Weller tracks he should have never gave away, especially the title track, Far From the Hurting Kind. And Paul Weller should have never given Dr Love to Bananarama, either.

Demos released decades after the original aren't the subject here - he still gave away "Goodbye" to Mary Hopkin. There was never an "official Paul/Beatles" version of the song until 1996.

Bruce released his own versions of "Fire" and "Because the Night", too - that doesn't change the fact he gave them away, does it?

Same goes for Prince. He eventually released his own version of "Nothing Compares 2 U", but the fact remains that he gave it to the Family...

personally i like the badfinger version better than the beatles version.

both are good, but badfinger seems to have more punch.
