...actually, their self-titled debut is the more essential album, but the 2nd album still has several choice cuts such as the title track:

The acapella group The Persuasions have a great LP called Street Corner Symphony which has a killer rendition of Bob Dylan's "The Man in Me" (from New Morning):

I'd mention Ray Charles' Atlantic albums, total of 4, released 1977-1980. To avoid confusion, let's call it his 2nd Atlantic period :)
These albums were never reissued and I did not see them being mentioned.
They were not "instant classics" but quite strong and enjoyable.

Two long compilations were released recently on CD, one with his early 70s material and another one with late 70s material.

If you look at the prices for the longOOP Sequel CD, you'd rate it as "sought after" rather than "forgotten".

The complete HDH/Invictus/Hot Wax catalog was heavily re-released recently, with lots of expanded editions and compilation CDs, boxes etc.

One of my favorite "forgotten" soul records, from the one hit wonder group named New York City is the song "I'm Doin' Fine Now".

The song reached #17 in 1973. I rarely, if ever hear this song played on any oldies stations. Great harmony and vocals IMO.

Song To The System was included on several compilations, but this track is definitely under the radar.
This band needs to be uncovered and brought into the spotlight!

Can't listen here, hopefully this is not a rerecorded version. Listen to how he downshifts from the chorus into the third verse. The mark of a MASTER.

Folknik.."I Guess I'll Have To Cry, Cry, Cry" isn't on a hits comp but is on the James Brown Ballads comp, which is cheaper than the Say It Loud album it's also on..and yeah it's like "Lost Someone"..brilliant examples of deep soul emotion.
One of my many under rated songs is "Pity A Fool" ('72) by Barbara & The Browns..which, along with a lot of other stunning tracks, is on their Can't Find Happiness cd from Kent..sorry can't post links.

The other day the shop I frequent was playing Eight Minutes, from 1972,a kid group from Chicago leaning more towards Fifth Dimension than the Jackson 5,and,for me,the lack of that Motown sheen of the era is a plus.Pretty scarce-there's a reason why this goes in the $30 range.AM radio would have been easier to stay with in 1972 if the airwaves had this in rotation.

    Two suggestions.

If you combine Syl Johnson and The Numero Group you get Syl Johnson - Complete Mythology, a great box of his pre-Hi Records recordings (IIRC).

Percy Mayfield - His Tangerine and Atlantic Sides. Percy Mayfield plus Ray Charles' band. Hard-to-find but among his best sounding stuff.
