Watched another video - this time a straight instrumental performance. He definitely draws from Jansch, Drake, Fahey, Kaukonen and Kottke, which is good. None of that is bad. But man...dude doesn't need to *be* any of those guys.

I think what's irking me is (intentionally or not), the likes of Jansch and Drake existed on their own terms. Maybe not the most hyped or biggest selling of their day, but those that discover their work love it, and it really is special and timeless.

So it's a big "oooooof course" moment for me to see Pitchfork pushing the poster boy for the ultimate rehash of that stuff. It just doesn't sit well with me for reasons I cannot articulate. I'm not trying to threadcrap, either. Just my honest impression.

Trust, I get what you are saying.

But let's be honest starsailor's like Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, etc, who exist in their own dimension are 1 in every 20 million. Tough act to follow!
And there have been many truly great artist who started out simply aping their favorite records.

Along these lines, I highly recommend Michael Kiwanuka, Jose Gonzalez, and John Smith.

Anybody a fan here? I assume there are plenty. I only discovered him the other day, but immediately loved his stuff, obviously very heavily influenced by 70s folk-jazz but it doesn't sound like he's just a cheap copycat. I really like it, and I just pre-ordered his knew album which seems like it'll be even better.

Judging from the description, this should be right up my alley...

I gave the previous one a good listen (the NPR stream for the latest album is US only), both the vocals and guitar style are extremely derivative of Bert Jansch and Pentangle up to the point where it almost sounds like he's copying Jansch verbatim.... I still enjoyed listening to it a lot and will check out the new one as soon as it's available here. :)

Listened to this on NPR, and really enjoyed it. Thanks everyone here for bringing this to my attention!

I just saw Ryley and his band this weekend at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN! I had not heard of him before but the program description caught my attention and boy, it was certainly one of the best impromptu decisions I've made in a while. It was a wonderful set and his band is absolutely top-notch. Really enjoyable and I'd strongly advise catching him live if you can.

Bought the new CD at the gig and know it will be getting a lot of play - beautiful stuff.

Holy %#*@, I just heard he's opening for Real Estate tonight at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. That's about 2 miles from my house, but I can't go.
