Saw the film for the first time ever (it was just on TCM right now). It was a very good film, with Paul Newman as a down-on-his luck lawyer, who decides to take the matter of a victim of a medical malpractice suit to his own hands, by taking the case to court to restore his credibility as a lawyer.

And his co-stars in the film also did a great job, too.

Did you spot Bruce Willis in the final courtroom scene?

I watched half last night too before drifting off, dvrd the rest fr tonight. Also caught the last 20 minutes of absence of malice high has me wanting to see the whole thing. That Newman guy wasn't just about salad dressing, I predict he'll go far!

Before The Verdict, Paul Newman's career looked washed up. He hadn't had a hit since The Sting, which was 9 years earlier.

It remains one of his best performances.

My favorite Paul Newman movie by a mile, in fact one of my all-time faves. The fact that he didn't win an Oscar for this is a travesty.

Great film - the only downside is Charlotte Rampling who looks like she's sleepwalking

the funny thing is watching Absence of Malice, I thought, damn he's one handsome man. One year later for the Verdict, and he looked old and beat down (perfect for both roles).

Yeah, but the scene in NYC between the two of them was filmed around the corner from me.

I've always wished that Mamet had allowed a lawyer to look at the script to get more of the details correct. I mean basic things, like how to cite a precedent.

I DVRed this last night.i haven't seen it since it was first released. I watched Absence of Malice right before. I always loved that movie. Wilford Brimleys scenes at the end are worth the price of admission alone.

I hadn't seen it in decades. I tuned in for the last half hour and really enjoyed it.

Newman should have won the Oscar for this one, and for Nobody's Fool!

Oh, you mean like how Newman dies at the end?

Actually, I don't remember the movie all that well, so I apologize if that's what happens.

    Found this on Wikipedia.
"Bruce Willis has an uncredited background appearance as an extra, in one of his first film appearances. After the verdict is read for the plaintiff, Willis can be seen, smiling, to the left of Newman's head. Tobin Bell also appears, to Newman's right."

I always liked "The Verdict". 1982 was the first year ever where I saw all 5 Oscar Best Pic noms before the ceremony. "Verdict" was my 2nd favorite back then - and still is!

Great film. Jack Warden and James Mason are also very good in this film.

Just my opinion: A 1982 movie discussion does not need spoiler tags.

    ET phones (and goes) home.
Sid commits suicide. Zack takes Paula away from the factory and they live happily ever after.
    Dolly doesn't show them. Dang.
