Well, I wouldn't consider Armageddon essential, but...

    The Complete Jacques Tati
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
    Two-Lane Blacktop

Could I trade out Che and add Black Orpheus instead? That would work better for me.

Looking through my collection, these are the handful I go back to most often:

    Breathless
    8 1/2
    Seven Samurai
    Rushmore
    F is for Fake
    Rashomon

    ...great packages for each.

    I'm on a Criterion buying ban because I have too many unwatched ones. Haha. My most watched though, off the top of my head;

    Grey Gardens
    Harold & Maude
    Rosemary's Baby
8 1/2 (I'd add La Dolce Vita but my blu-ray is still unwatched...)
    Two Lane Blacktop
    Days of Heaven
    Howard's End
    Breathless
    Persona
    Repulsion
    3 Women
    Nashville
Easy Rider/Five Easy Pieces/The Last Picture Show from the America Lost and Found set
I would say Shoah is essential but not something you really watch repeatedly...

well, here's what I have. I have what I want, what I watch multiple times. I've thought of getting a few like Rififi but we'll see, maybe on sale

    THE THIRD MAN
    On The Waterfront
    400 Blows
    Hard Days Night
    The 39 Steps
    Foreign Correspondent

Also own Man who knew too much, lady vanishes, and Night train to munich, but I wouldn't call them essential.

I'm shocked to find out that I have 379 of them. At one point I was trying to get a full set but couldn't keep up.

I pretty much mirror everybody else's essential titles and would add:
    Wild Strawberries
    All of the Chaplin discs
    Most of the silent titles.

there's a bunch I think about buying blind, but after having done that with Ministry of Fear, I've instead joined netflix to watch them first, like Paris TX, Tokyo Story... I do have Odd Man Out as a preorder, but I love Third Man and Fallen Idol already

Considering I own about 95% of them, it's too hard to narrow down a list of "essentials". ;)

Essential how? The extra features, the transfer quality? Or just because we like the movie? I think the only two I ever purchased (as opposed to rented) were El Norte and A Hard Days Night.

The first of my titles is only on DVD. For some reason, when they did the Blu Ray version of Gimme Shelter, they did not include Hells Angel president Ralph Hubert "Sonny" Barger's phone call into KSAN-FM in San Francisco, the day after the concert at Altamont. One-and-a-half hours of that programme is available for listening on YouTube.
