Sounds like fun! I've been meaning to pick up a few of those comps, but there are so many. Cosimo Studios, Deesu, Ric & Ron, Jin, Ace, and of course all of these.

There are a lot of comps to be sure. I have my favorite eras genres, producers, songwriters, etc., though, so that helps me prioritize.

My absolute favorite music. The city blows me away with its musical diversity. The greatest music city on earth!! For my money this set represents as well as anything: new and old!! Thanks for all the good suggestions above!!

I know that Allen Toussaint does not consider his own voice his greatest asset, but in this case all his backing vocals are truly incredible!

I bought that set and it's great. Some clunker discs, but for the money, you can't go wrong. Nice sounding set too!

I saw Allen Toussaint just after Christmas last year at Snug Harbor on Frenchman St in NOLA. He truly is a national treasure. He's a fantastic performer who exudes warmth and sincerity. See him if you get a chance!!

Several of Allen Toussaint's early instrumentals are wonderful, especially his funky original "Java" (later Al Hirt's biggest hit). It was only recently that I found out he wrote this (under a pseudonym):

With all the music we have, they should do a SECOND box.

Ace Records just put out this guy's complete singles from '59 to '64. Looking forward to picking it up, along with Eddie Bo's Ric & Ron singles.

Agreed, especially since that box, as much as I like it, could have reached back a little further like many of the tunes in this thread.

I know you're criticizing lightly but I've read that complaint before. I think "The Big OL Box of New Orleans" perfectly straddles the old traditions with the new. Without the new, the tradition dies and is placed in a museum for us old guys. In my case, this box is responsible for a dozen or so visits to NOLA. Each visit is filled with music morning, noon, and night. I'm thankful a place like that still exists!
