There's widespread love for that music. It's as essential as it gets. If you're still on the fence regarding track order, a programmable multi-disc changer solves that problem. I don't find it as off-putting as others, but I know that the way the box was sequenced pissed Ornette off.
What in bloody 'ell is THAT?

This was the first Monk album I ever had, and probably in the first 10 jazz albums I ever had. It was a gift from my girlfriend, now my wife of many years. We were discovering jazz together, and had read about Monk and heard some versions of Round Midnight. This music arrived like a message from another planet, unlike anything we had ever heard, but familiar at the same time, sophisticated and earthy. Pannonica was "our song" at our wedding..we hired a jazz band. This album is one of my desert island discs.

That's funny, I'm also listening to this album. A 1961 date with Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Eric Dolphy (flute, alto saxophone), John Coltrane (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone), McCoy Tyner (piano), Reggie Workman (bass), Art Davis (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums).

I'm heading back home today though I'll be taking the long, slow way down PCH 1 and cutting over to Santa Rosa to check out The Last Record Store, not literally of course, but a well known shop that I've never been to. Not sure how they stand on jazz titles but we'll see. It's been a restful three days up here, just what the doctor ordered.

This is the best place that I know to get some help with a couple Roland Kirk questions - knowledgable jazz fans and music lovers. I am listening to my Roland Kirk records:
    • we free kings Mercury mono lp
    • Quartet meets the Benny Golson orchestra Mercury stereo lp
    • The inflated tear Atlantic Jazzlore reissue from 1982
    • The Limelight/Verve years Mosaic 4-lp set
    • Bright Moments Atlantic 2-lp set from 1973
    • The return of the 500 lb. Man Warner Brothers lp
The first question concerns The Inflated Tear - should I upgrade the sound of the Jazzlore lp? The music is spectacular!

Question two: what should I explore next - I love everything above ( meets Benny Golson and Slightly Latin from the Mosaic set incrementally less than the others ). Particularly love Rip, Rig & Panic, we free kings, The Inflated Tear and Bright Moments.

Although I prefer vinyl to cds, I am not a fanatic about it - open to cds if the sound is demonstrably better.

    Thanks, Charlesp

I'm just going to address the music, not the sound. I think that Atlantic Records. . . well sound quality isn't that big a variance ime and I seem to have differing views on cd sound than many here so I'll not mention them.

But I recommend as next targets:

    Blacknuss
    Domino
    Rahsaan Rahsaan

And the Jazz Icon DVD (well both, but at least this one)

I love Kirk, I could recommend them all.
