"Rescue Me" is not by the Cranberries, but by the German pop group Bell, Book & Candle.

"A Good Heart" is not by Rod Stewart but by former Undertones lead singer Feargal Sharkey.

I'm sure a few people mistook John Cafferty's "On the Dark Side" for The Boss.

How about the whole Andy Kim / Neil Diamond confusion? They don't look dissimilar either.

Golden Brown by the Doors, Glass of Champagne by Roxy Music and Me, Myself, I by Tracy Chapman should not be confused with inferior versions.

I didn't see "Be Thankful for What You Got," but that's another one. Many people think it's by Curtis Mayfield, when it's actually sung by William DeVaughn.

I was absolutely convinced that "Automatic" by The Pointer Sisters was a Stevie Wonder hit.

At first glance, perhaps. But to the musical layman probably not that big of a stretch at all. McFerrin - at the time not particularly well known by the mainstream - affects a pseudo Jamaican accent. And who is/was the most famous Jamaican musician at the time...?

This one was presented as an Internet meme but "Stuck In The Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel (Gerry Rafferty) sounding like Bob Dylan.

That's funny because I thought Prince wrote it and maybe even sang it (it sounds like a man to me). :D

The author doesn't mention how he came up with the list besides sitting on a barstool, which I can believe, but I strongly suspect he got this idea after seeing mislabeled mp3's on Frostwire or Grooveshark or something like that.

"Axel F" is one mp3 people mislabel a lot, because "Harold Faltermeyer" is definitely not a household name. Herbie Hancock is not a crazy guess; he had an instrumental hit the prior year with "Rockit", which one could perhaps confuse with this song. Plus, both names start with "H".

I haven't used Frostwire in more than a decade (when it used to be called Limewire), but some of the more egregiously mislabeled mp3's I frequently saw included "Seasons in the Sun" by the Mamas and Papas, "House of the Rising Sun" by the Doors, "96 Tears" by the Rolling Stones, "You Were On My Mind" by Peter, Paul, and Mary, "Red Rubber Ball" by the Dave Clark 5, and "Magnet and Steel" by Fleetwood Mac.

This is one of the reasons why I stopped using Frostwire altogether.

With apologies to those who have already read this elsewhere on this forum, there is a Helen Reddy track (Angie Baby) on itunes from a dubious source with a picture of Anne Murray as its artwork. Sorta similar to this thread.

It wasn't a huge hit, but I remember more than one person asking me if I heard the new Annie Lennox song "Better Than Nothing".

Oh I remember seeing tracks advertising JIMI HENDRIX STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN JOHN LENNON etc etc. Always hilarious, always, like, 1.xx kb per file. "No, that's not obviously a virus at all!"

I thought that 'Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)' by Bob Dylan would be #1.

Heart of Gold by Bob Dylan is alluded to in the Biograph notes.

Public Execution by Mouse & The Traps does sound like Dylan 65/66.

  22. No one has mentioned one of my favorites yet: Come and Get It by The Beatles.
