Thank you Lonson - music always trumps sound, but, like you, if I can listen to the music that I love in the best sound possible, so much the better. I will absolutely check out your recommendations, including the Jazz Icons dvd!

Lonson I'm in the kitchen with the Tombstone Blues

That DVD is in color with stereo sound and you will LOVE it. :D

I'll say this soundwise: I have bought every Kirk cd that has been put out in the 24 bit series by Warner Japan and they have become my favorite versions.

    As a left field choice,

    Soul 69 by Aretha Franklin.

You may understandably surmise from the title that this is soul, but it might more correctly have been called Jazz 69. Some cracking jazz musicians were pulled together to provide the sounds behind the Queen of Soul's vocals....

Enjoy if you get the chance...

This is a much better sounding CD than the US version released in 1990.

Teddy Edwards, TANGO IN HARLEM (Gitanes/Verve 527 468-2, France, released in 1995). I had never seen nor heard of this CD until finding it today. Looking online it looks pretty scarce, and I believe it may only have been issued in France (whereas some of his others for Gitanes/Verve had U.S. releases). Compared to his others for Verve around that time which I find are rather spotty - and way over-conceptualized and arranged - this one is refreshingly straightforward and stripped down - just Teddy plus Christian McBride and Billy Higgins, no other horns, vocals, strings, harmony instruments, etc. The uncluttered setting provides an excellent opportunity to hear the unique way that Edwards approaches a tune as an improviser. And the tune selection is great - including Edwards' own "Sunset Eyes," "Ornithology," "Nica's Dream," "Undecided," and "The Nearness of You." A little late-career gem.

I'd also plug Roy Haynes' Out of the Afternoon on Impulse. It has some awesome Kirk on it. Speakers' Corner recently reissued it on vinyl. Not sure if it is still available.

If there are only two types of music: The Blues and Zippety Doo-Dah......this is as good as the latter gets:

Very rarely play post comeback Miles, but this and We Want Miles have held up pretty well.
Don't know why this one's out of print when a lot of the lesser more pop albums remain available.

I rely like this album. I bought it when it was first released and it took me bit to get into it but now it's on my play regularly shelf.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd like to add more seventies Braxton to my collection.
