I usually steer away from those "Ten Photos That Won't Have You Believing your Eyes!" websites -- like there's any shortage of those --- but I wasted a moment on one and found this. I thought I was actually cool enough to "share" (the buzz word of the decade.) This is them filming the MGM lion's roar. I wonder how the sound guy had any clue where to set his levels? How many takes can you get from a lion?

Well-known fake photo. There's actually two or three of them out there.

Is there an actual photo? That top lion sure looks like the lion. The bottom one certainly doesn't. They probably had it chained up and were poking at it.

I started researching it but it's too complicated. Something like seven different lions over the years "Slate" "Jackie" "Leo" "Tanner"... Apparently taught to roar on cue.

Here is an ACTUAL photo set from when MGM tried to film a new, color version for widescreen ("Camera-65") in 1955:
    http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/c65test.htm

I love Marty's comments from that site: << By the time Raintree County was released in 1957 a vastly improved version was made which combined Leo and the rest of the logo using an optical printer. Leo's head from that version is still being used by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer though his voice has been replaced with a dreadfully distorted overly loud digital recording of what could be Mrs. Godzilla delivering triplets. >>

So you're saying they're in fact not telling the truth, and just lion?

    Here's the OP's picture in higher-res.

Looks pretty legit to me. How does Vidiot know it's fake?

I like how some of the MGM Tom and Jerry cartoons feature Tom meowing doing a parody of the MGM lion. :)

Look for the split screen. The lion's eye-line is also wrong.

I was going to say, who would have thought they'd actually try to shoot it with his head sticking through the board! I was sure it was always a process shot. But they did!

Again, that's one brave crew on that set.
