Silly, unnecessary article. I have worked as a surgical first assist (as a physician assistant) on many surgeries, in the fields of orthopedics, neurosurgery, general surgery, and bariatrics. There is only one rule in the OR: the surgeon controls everything in that room, including the music. He picks what he wants, if he wants to listen to Bloodrock's DOA, and he brings his CD, so be it. Good surgeons are hyperfocused in surgery and wouldn't be distracted by any kind of music (unless it is too loud, and in that case, there might be trouble communicating with circulating nurse, scrub tech, first assist, etc.).

Most of the music I see in our operating rooms are classical, ambient, and new age. I've also seen a few alternative, country, and jazz CDs as well. I work in a religious-based non-profit hospital, so there are also guidelines for music that probably rule out funeral doom metal and the like, but yes, the surgeons are ultimately in control.

From Prince to Ozzy Osbourne ... almost anything you can hear on a surgery. When I was a resident and stayed with surgeons who could put almost any type of music. Today: Personally I prefer "the sound of silence" to overcome the critical part of the surgery. During the surgery: No Music ! I find it a source of distraction in a surgery ... so I prefer "silence" or classical music (as a viable alternative to low volume)

Absolutely fascinating. I defy you to find another forum in the world where members can weigh in on this kind of subject :)

Personally from the patient side - whatever makes the surgeon happy, I'm all for it!
