  8. Isn't a Japanese/Chinese band just as rare as an Argentine/Brazilian band?

Frankly, haven't made my way to China; I'm up to my neck in Japan's vast eclectic music scene. And I'm more likely to explore Southeast Asia before tackling as huge a country as China.

    First up, Rovo.

Think: Acid Mothers Temple, except somewhat more elegant and organized. Busy percussion!

Can't have a Japan music scene thread without Isao Tomita.

    OOIOO

Female quartet fronted on guitar by Boredoms' drummer Yoshimi P-Wi. Augmented here by Javanese Gamelan players; current direction seemingly inspired some by Boredoms' drumming circle.

Even when one is talking about Chinese bands, there're vast cultural and language differences between bands from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Pop/rock bands, as know it on this forum, didn't exist on mainland China, or maybe even Taiwan, in the 60s. However, in HK, the influences of Elvis and the Beatles were already taking hold of pop culture. Still, pop/rock bands in HK doesn't sing in Cantonese until after the mid 70s.

A sample of 60s HK pop music, Norman's Fancy", by Teddy Robin and the Playboys....

Lead guitarist William Kwan would go on to be a record producer, and ultimately, the head of HK PolyGram Records during the 80s, while his brother, Teddy Robin would become a movie director/producer.

One of my favorite 80s Hong Kong band was 小島 (or Small Island), which only lasted 2 albums (and in 2 different configurations!). The below track is called 她的心 (or "Her Heart"), from their 1985 self-titled debut album....

    Kokusyoku Sumire.

    Zany, brainy dark cabaret.

Dainty-ditz veneer, serious classical chops (European and Japanese).

    Whirled into unusual little J-pops.
