Yeah I posted a clip earlier from the "Akira" soundtrack. They are great! Their 80s music is fantastic but the mid-70s recordings are not to be missed. Here is a live version of "Osorezan" from the first album.

I'm still trying to figure out why Japan and China have been lumped together for the purposes of this thread.

    "Got any favorite Portuguese/Greek bands?"
    "Got any favorite Canadian/Mexican bands?"

I was happy to learn of Kikagaku Moyo last year:

  5. But I meant bands with both Argentines and Brazilians in them . . . together. That's dangerous, I know, although Pedro Aznar did do a rather nice collection of Brazilian songs a few years ago, and Caetano Veloso did a pretty good Spanish language album as well (Fina Estampa). But I've always thought that it's more likely that Diego Maradona will eventually become a decent human being before those two sides really get together. ;)

  6. Actually, Mexican singer Natalia LaFourcade made a pretty good album in Canada a few years ago. It happens.

I agree. Next thing you know someone will say "I love oriental music".

Plus you're probably going to find it tough to track down any Chinese bands' music on youtube unless it has been put there by someone outside of China or the band is in some way international.

I'm surprised Spitz hasn't been mentioned yet. They're one of my favorite '90s era band from Japan.

Not a band per se, but Faye Wong's "Dream Person", a Cantonese version of the Cranberries' "Dreams", is one of the rare covers that's better than the original.

Here's one from China. I'm not big on Chinese rock; I've always related to the Japanese better. But this is my one token Chinese band:

Happy Avenue - Cold Steel (2010)

Nearly 360,000 Chinese live in my valley in California, and the number is growing exponentially. My city is a Chinese-majority city, as many cities are around here. Most of my business clients are Chinese. Almost all of them use YouTube, and many of them are old hands at getting past the Great Firewall while in China to access YouTube and Facebook and Blogger, et. al. I also don't think the "oriental" comment was called for; the thread is no worse than saying "What is your favorite European music?" or "What is your favorite African music?" I agree that China and Japan have little in common, but I also don't see any harm in keeping them together. If it were my thread, I would have added Korea to the list. But it isn't. I think it is a fun thread with lots of good music on it.
