    The Dynamic Range Day Award
    About the award

The Dynamic Range Day Award is given annually to a great-sounding, dynamic album - proving
that music doesn’t have to be crushed to be popular and successful.

To be considered for the award, an album must meet at least one of the following requirements:

    • The overall Integrated Loudness must be no higher than -11 LUFS as measured with an R128 meter
    • OR the complete album must measure no less than DR8 on the TT Meter

Simply post your suggestion via Twitter or the Facebook page and we’ll take a listen !

How and why do we choose these values ?

Dynamic Range Day is all about the real-world sound, not the numbers – and to claim that DR16+ is a “requirement” for great sound simply doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.

The aim of the award is to highlight mainstream releases which sound great and haven’t been “smashed”. Values of <-11 LUFS or >DR10 will probably sound better than the minimum requirements for the award, but it is possible to get great sound at even higher levels, so these values have been chosen to reflect that.

"...XM Sirius would like to have the opposite now. They would like to have records specially done for them that are more dynamic than the commercially released records are. Because their system can broadcast that better."

Yes that album and in particular the vinyl sounds wonderful from a mastering perspective, I've come to expect no less from Doug Sax who always seems to do fabulous work.

Sad DR values. In the 80's an early 90's albums on CD measured DR12-DR15!

I agree those are nothing to write home about, in fact they are downright disappointing.

So 4 albums on that shortlist have a DR of only DR8 which is the absolute minimum in order to get accepted.
In my opinion the minimum should be DR9 or DR10.

The problem with going by album ratings is that it's just an average. Some songs can be brickwalled while others are not.

For example with "Lost in the Dream", min DR = 5, max DR = 10

These 3 sound pretty good on digital:

    • Jack White – Lazaretto (DR10)
    • Opeth – Pale Communion (DR11)

I'd say it should be at least DR10 and nothing less, by setting the minimum as low as DR8 there is basically no point in what they are doing.

Agreed. An album that has a DR of 8 still sounds too compressed.

Unfortunately DR ratings have no concept of analogue vs. digital compression. I've heard albums with a DR rating of 6 that sound fine, and others that gave me a headache.

DRD goal (DR8) is pretty pathetic, IMO :(... I still fail to grasp why purposely adding distortions to the final mix in mastering (via compression or peak-limiting) is necessary. I think, it goes against common sense & best practices.

So is this for CDs only? While a niche artist, I loved Eluveitie's Origins on vinyl (DR14) versus the CD (DR7). Best argument I have seen yet for buying a vinyl over a CD.

I watched Ian's video Hangout last year on D.R. day. In regards to YouTube, I suggest you read Mark Waldrep's blog(www.realhd-audio.com) on the subject.
