On the TT! Original pressing on Tizona records. Very spiritual music.

Though I prefer Bobby Hutcherson's 1960s work, this set comes close. I'd also recommend his 1980s Evidence and Landmark albums.

Another very good one from the seventies. This one has no electronic piano. A quintet with Woody Shaw. (No Harold Land.)

That came out here on CD as this:

Shaw and Hutch reunited 10 years later on these (which are also essential):

Yes I thought too that these early albums were great but showy and that Carter was destined for great things. But alas that was not to be. I found his later albums to be derivative and lacked fire and quickly lost interest after that. Incidentally I feel the same way about Joshua Redman.

I love Bud and I have the original CD set that's book bound. Some great music but some real low points as well. Some of the sessions make excruciating listening (Bud's playing was really 'off') and I don't know how it would merit release except for the sake of academic completeness (and corporate greed?).

I had a similar response to both Carter and joshua Redman. The last time I saw James Carter he berated an audience member wirh his horn. (Simulating a one sided tirade through his sax). He thought he was cute. I thought he was immature and this, after he had six or seven albums under his belt. I still play his early albums occassionally but only when I'm in the mood for heavy metal jazz. :)

First of all I just LOVE the way Pee Wee Marquette introduces the band! It transforms the mood from good to hot!
This has to be one of the best live jazz albums of all time.

Is this considered to be Clifford Browns breakthrough?

Lonson I'm in the kitchen with the Tombstone Blues

I was listening to this on the new Clifford Brown Blue Note three cd release last week. Great material. I don't know whether this or the studio sessions he did for the label as sideman and leader were the breakthrough. . . .

    Right now, the SHM-CD

The sound quality from a recording made in 1948, 1951 and 1952 is unbelievable on this japanese reissue!
    And the music! Oh my!
