  1. I think this is one of those cases where corporate "censorship" resulted in a better artistic outcome. The restored cover just looks kinda scungy to me.

What about David Bowie - Space Oddity? Diamond Dogs??

  3. US version is a slightly different album too, it should be noted.

I don't know, what could be more harmless than a little... with blossoms on it?

I really do like the demure version though.

It's funny, for all of these years I had the second beige/blue LP that I bought in 1978 when I was nine years old and had it engrained in my brain that it was the cover. Then a year or so ago I bought a Foreigner boxset that contained the first cover above. I assumed it was a reissue cover but then came to discover while searching for digital art to put in iTunes that it was the original and all these years I had the second pressing. I still can't reconcile in my head that the first cover is Double Vision. It will always be that second one above for me.

1st Pressing (1978): Red and green label. Mostly brown cover with the words "Double Vision" below the band photo at bottom of of the cover.
2nd Pressing (1978): Silver and green label. Blue tint to photo and "Double Vision" below the band name which is blue. Has "<3 Pogo" scratched into the inner circle wax.
3rd Pressing (1979): Silver and green label. Purple tint to photo and "Double Vision" below the band name which is purple.

I always preferred the RSVP cover. When I was forced to sell most of my vinyl collection many years ago, that was one of the few I just couldn't part with.

  9. The nice thing about the Japanese box set is that you get all of these cover variations on six replica sleeves, along with the boring paper bag. :)

Never understood why my '87 CD had the gold lettering.

Ian Dury - Do It Yourself approx 31 cover variations.

I did read somewhere that there are some collectors who have them all!

The Police "Synchronicity" was released with 36 variations of the cover... I would have preferred one good one... :)

Maybe, the alternative cover is better, agree but you are missing the main issue "Album covers with art variations".

The censorship acted not only with the album cover, some versions of the album ommited "Dear God".
Despite the better artistic outcome, the original purposes are genuine and with a message... in '86 things were very different.
