So Awesome! Thanks a lot for sharing. The break pattern is super interesting and consistent. Also interesting is the vertical standing waves that get set up and how those have a different rate of travel than the CD itself!!!

That was really cool. I'd like to see what happens to 12" vinyl!

So what happens if the CD is made of SHM (Super Hard Material), like those of SHM-CD?

It looked to me like they were using CDRs. I wonder if pressed aluminum CDs exhibit different stress patterns. I would think they'd be about the same as the polycarbonate layer is the primary player in this experiment.
It would be fun to use the slo-mo camera when cooking CDs in a microwave oven. CDRs cooked briefly in a microwave tend to exhibit circular arc patterns while CDs typically have radial burns.

I had a PC video game CD (Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed) shatter like that in a 52X drive. It destroyed the drive. For years I kept the shards in a ziploc bag, but I eventually tossed it or lost it.

If the disc is already compromised in some way (cracked, poor adhesion, etc) or is unbalanced, striking something in the interior of the drive while spinning, it may shatter at much slower speeds than in the video. I've "drained" shattered CD bits out of a handful of client's optical drives. What a mess! TKO for the optical drive. It pays to check the condition of your discs beforehand.

I had a commercial cd crack from the center hole all the way to the outer edge. It was YES The Ladder,I Had played it many times with no issue then that day my player wigged out and that was the cause. I'm glad it did not frag and damage my player. It was never put into a computer drive either so it had to be a latent defect in the disc.
