Why are Michael Jackson's vocals low in the mix sometimes?

Never Let Me Down was one of the first Bowie albums I really listened to. I was really intrigued about the whole "it being the worst" thing, even though he had the huge Glass Spider tour afterwards. Also, I'm a hardcore Queen fan and the David Richards-produced albums from the same time are among my favorites, so I was very interested in it.

All I have to say is that "Day In, Day Out" needs to be chopped literally in half. That length is uncalled for. Iron Maiden's "The Angel and the Gambler" anyone? :)

JohnnyQuest, I just listened to Show You The Way To Go.

Wow! Those are some freakin great vocals!

I ditto. I also share the strange fascination that is attached to the black sheep albums of my favorite artists.
I've always loved "Day In Day Out". The length doesn't bother me in the slightest. The more, the better. ;)

Glad you enjoyed it. :) I especially love the guitar playing on that song.

I loved that bit in your profile about getting that AC/DC album when you were eight... I'm not ready to listen to them now, never mind when I was eight!

Bowie is all over the place. As you've no doubt discovered. My favourite is Aladdin Sane. Great pop album and artwork to match. Half of Scary Monsters is superb. Side one is all you really need for that record.

Black Tie White Noise is another goodie. Thanks to JQ for helping me re evaluate that one. Let's Dance is pretty great, if you like pop. I like Hours too. That makes 2 of us! Frankly, this is a whole new thread, but Bowie is worth your time. Think of all the stuff you could collect?!

Going back to this MJ thread, I have a Bowie point that sort of fits. On the opening track of Aladdin Sane, the wonderful Watch That Man, Bowie's voice is mixed very low. When the record came out in 1973, some people returned the LP upon hearing it thinking it was faulty!

Day In Day Out was the lead single. Possibly a mistake in hindsight. He'd have better going for one of the more commercial songs. After all these years, when I hear the monologue at the beginning of Glass Spider, I still don't know whether to laugh or cry!

You're right and it's very noticeable. I can barely make out the words he sings whenever "Watch that Man" is playing. Smh
It's still a great opener to Aladin Sane. :bdance:That song is heavily inspired/influenced by the Rolling Stones. (It's Only Rock n Roll)

Yes, you need the lyric sheet for Watch That Man! What a great opening song though?

The opening bit about Sticky Fingers actually makes sense to me. This shows how warped I am!

Do you mean you've never seen a specific version of Exile or the LP at all? I've never looked for it but you'd think there'd be some about...

Nope, I've never seen a single copy of either it or Physical Graffiti.

It's a great song but a poor choice for a lead single. That's for sure.
He was better off going with "Shining Star" since it sounds like a super glossy prince rip off.
"Beat of you drum" is arguably the most catchy song on NLMD. I would even choose that over "Shining Star" for lead single.
Instead of "Too Dizzy" he should've taken off "Glass Spider". That song (for lack of a better word) is far more embarrassing. It's down right humiliating and the fact that he named his tour after that piece of trash is perplexing.

After making us suffer through that monologue on GS, the song should have been a whole lot better than it was. It just goes nowhere.

Beat and Shining Star would have made great lead singles.

Sorry about that. I'll stay on topic. At least MJ related. Lol
As for leading single screw ups, Epic made a big mistake not releasing "The Way You Love Me" as the lead single for the "Michael" album.

I don't buy albums online because that ruins the fun of the chase. Not that I'm specifically looking for certain things at any given moment, but I know things I'm looking for/want, etc., so then when I stumble upon something I want it's that much better. :)

    It's like a treasure hunt.

No, by all means carry on. I don't care. There's great conversation going - don't derail the train! :)

If this was an album-by-album thread or something serious that'd be different. On a casual thread like this it's all up in the air. :)

In that case, let's carry on. ;)
Due to financial limitations I can't purchase box sets or anything of that sort. If I did I wouldn't be able to pay my bills monthly. I know myself, I'd get way too carried away. Lol
Plus I enjoy the perks of being able to customize/personalize my playlists on Itunes. I can just purchase whatever song I want from whichever album I choose instead of being tied to the whole thing.
You can still do that by ripping it from the cd onto your computer but that's too much legwork. :p It's a double edged sword because I actually am a huge admirer of artwork and would love to love to showcase my favorite albums in my living room but I can't at this very moment.

The only place I could get vinyl during the school year was once a month there was a street fair downtown that my dad would go to with his car club. I'd tag along and go check out the various bands and little shops, etc. There was this kickass two-story antique mall. One guy in particular owned a spot inside where he sold used albums. My very first haul of vinyl was from there. I thought my mom would murder me - I blew $90 of birthday money that first night, haha.

Probably a third of all the vinyl I do/have owned came from there.

That first haul included a couple Wings albums and Houses Of The Holy along with Planet Waves by Dylan.

My dad's friend kept busting my chops about the cover of HOTH being kiddie porn, haha.

    :)

Most times when we'd go I'd end up getting at least one or two albums. Sometimes things were CRAZY overpriced - no way am I paying $30 for a copy of Goats Head Soup. But most of the time things were actually pretty cheap and I found some good rarities sitting on that floor with 6 multi-foot stacks of vinyl in front of me, searching and searching for something worthwhile, haha.

One of my first "rarity" purchases was the first few Badfinger singles (one, I think was pre-Badfinger), the first Badfinger album, and some of those Apple Mary Hopkins singles.

    :)

Yea I totally get what you mean. I love to collect what I can, but I just simply don't have the space or money for most of it. Besides, I don't have any setup at all besides my laptop and a 240gb iPod classic....

The only boxsets I have are the Lynyrd Skynyrd Boxset and Weird Tales Of The Ramones. They were both on sale for about $30 each so I snapped em up. Completely worth it - that was in my pre-ipod, cd-only days so they were total hauls :)

I bought a box set of the T. Rex album The Slider recently. It was ludicrously cheap. Knocked down from £120 to £20! It's absolutely bloody massive and I've nowhere to display it. Most of the things in it I'll play once if at all. It makes no sense but it was still nice!

The struggle is real! :p Hey this will get us by for now...
As I was saying earlier were their any songs by MJ that you wished were released as lead single but weren't?

Beautiful song that deserved more attention than it received. :) Bobby was it you that tried to get me into Fleetwood Mac?
