  3. What poet isn't a drunk? And what rock star from the 60s/70s wasn't. At least Morrison had the b*lls to bad mouth and stay away from the heavy stuff...until the end. *sigh*

I'm not sure Morrison beat it down that he was poet, but rather he was aspiring to be. It's his fans that project that hard and fast rule upon him.

But yeah, great music. I need that Mono vinyl on RSD this year!

You are probably right that it's that fans that made Morrison out to be a poet. As a moderate Doors fan, all I know is I like it when he's singing and hit the next button the rare times he's reading poetry.

Thing is, I'm not the least bit 'guilty' about not liking what I don't like. But that's just me.

Spinning Straight Outta Compton on the Thorens right now.A real classic.

There are many popular act that I don't like, but I don't feel guilty about it. The only two that I totally don't get, but I feel uneasy when I have to admit it (because they are so universally praised and adored) are Frank Sinatra and Jimi Hendrix.

Everyone has their own personal taste, your idea of 'quality' isn't a universal standard... It's rather arrogant to believe we that someone doesn't 'understand quality' because their tastes don't match your own...

When I said 'guilty' I probably meant 'uneasy' as in it makes you uneasy to tell other 'music fans' that you haven't clicked with particular artists.
As seen just above there is a culture of assuming that if someone doesn't like something they not cultured or intelligent enough to 'understand quality'. That's what gets my goat, this supposed gold standard of 'quality' that some artists have attained and goodness help anyone that goes against the grain when it comes to those artists that are highly regarded.

Hendrix I've never entirely got into, although I enjoy some of his music and feel like I should like more. But I don't. Yet.
Sinatra I just cannot click with. To paraphrase The Smiths 'because the music that he constantly sings, it says nothing to me about my life'!

For me, probably Metallica. They are alright, but very overrated, in my book.

That would be Kiss. Blunt radio friendly rock most of all sounding like posh back ground noise. No danger, no melodies, no heart. Only thing they proved was bad make-up can sell records.

    Aretha Franklin.

She's been dreadful for at least 30 years. Soul singers get away with murder!

Listen to this wretched piece of tuneless over-singing. And this was from when she was supposed to be good!
