Well, the thread title stipulates albums on which "one person plays all the instruments." Even if you take the position that the voice is a musical instrument, it's not an instrument that is said to be "played." So the thread title seems to allow for other vocalists.

I do consider the voice an instrument, but you're right about the semantics. I was asking for clarification from the OP because first I wondered about it myself, then saw there were a couple posts that also brought it up.

and then to complete fully the SHTV experience, I had to use beatles-related examples.

I remember hearing something about Ed Roland handling everything on the first Collective Soul album.

And depending on the album, I think Beck does most things.

Definitely not true regarding CS. It has, according to him, different musicians than the subsequent albums, but that's because it was only supposed to be a songwriting demo And not a band album. The official band members are officially credited so who knows who actually played on it.

Like I said before, I'd heard this. Guess it's not true. Lol. According to Wikipedia, Ross Childress and Shane Evans played on the demo that became collective soul's first album. If that's true, 3 out of 5 members isn't bad. :righton:

Phil Manzanera played everything on Primitive Guitars (apart from a bass part on one track added by John Wetton).

only on his four-track cassette home demo (golden feelings). even before he signed to Geffen, once he started recording in studios, other instrumentalists have always been involved.

Almost. Jerry Garcia played all instruments except some drums on his first solo album "Garcia" (1972). (as compared to Bob Weir's first solo, "Ace" where it was essentially a Grateful Dead album with all the players)

My first thought was Steve Winwood's Arc Of A Diver which I never liked as it seemed to me that the lack of fellow musicians gave a really lacklustre dynamic to the record. Since then I've tended to avoid albums where the artist plays all or lots of the instruments.

However, reading this thread makes me think that if Prince and Stevie Wonder can do it, it isn't impossible to get an exciting sound.

Stevie Wonder played all the instruments on some songs and most of the instruments on the others on Songs in the Key of Life.

That's got to count for something...
