I really like the sound of a hammer dulcimer and tried to search for music with that sound. Not much luck. I know some John Barry soundtrack stuff that makes use of it. But other than that it's pretty hard to find. So any suggestions mainly rock/pop style? Maybe even classical if it's not too hardcore.

The first three Spiritualized albums feature hammer dulcimer on several tracks, although it's subtle and used as a rhythm instrument for the most part. Lazer Guided Melodies (1992) even credits two different members of the band with it (although Mark Refoy may be playing a traditional folk dulcimer instead, Jason Pierce is definitely playing the hammered variety).

Aerosmith use one on a track from Pump (can`t recall the track right now) and Rush use one on "Resist" from Test For Echo.

Might want to fix up the tile to just hammer dulcimer.

A hammered dulcimer might get out of control :)

Quite a bit of Dead Can Dance's work features Lisa Gerrard on the dulcimer, or the Chinese yangqin which is pretty much the same thing, I believe. See also her solo work too.

I was just listening to an album by Of Montreal, Skeletal Lamping, that featured hammer dulcimer right at the start, though it wasn't that prominent throughout.

Richard Thompson would sometimes play it on his albums with Linda in the 70's, like Hokey Pokey.

Joemy Wilson has some great hammer dulcimer CD's.

I don't think the dulcimer played on "Lady Jane" is a hammer. I believe it's known as a "mountain dulcimer". I could be wrong.

Thanks everbody. There seems to be a lot. Some diverse stuff that's for sure. And that's only a good thing.

Richard Farina played dulcimer in his duo with Mimi. Not rock but it made the charts like pop.

XTC's "Beating of Hearts" has one.

Also, Tim Hart of Steeleye Span used one pretty extensively.

"Lady Jane" features a mountain dulcimer, not a hammer dulcimer.
