Very good series currently on PBS. Midwives working in 1950s East end London.

I am not sure whether it is a Catholic or Anglican nunnery?

    Anyone else enjoying it?

As our sons were delivered by Midwives and my first grandson is about to be, I'll have to check this out.

I was very interested to see in a recent episode that when electroshock was administered to a woman with some mental illness, no one had any qualms.

Many programs would have somehow managed to suggest that it was very inhumane, and represented later ideas as being present in the 1950s. Good scriptwriters on this show.

Caught the online stream Monday night. I miss Jessica Raine , but the ensemble cast continues to impress me.

I was under the impression the books were based on the experiences of the character Jenny Lee, so I am puzzled by this.

To be honest, I haven't read the books, so I don't know how the series reflects Jenny Lee's history. As far as the plot goes, Jenny Lee left Nonnatus House to work with terminally ill patients at Marie Curie Hospital. The first episode of season 4 was still narrated by "mature Jenny," though.

Terrific episode this week about sexual issues in late 50s Britain. The happy ending was a little too easily obtained.

    We've come along way though.

    Anyone still watching this series?

Still fascinating and very touching. The sisters and doctors are now seeing Thalidomide babies, though they don't yet know that the drug is the cause :(

I haven't seen it, but the subject is of course very sad.

I bought the 2 disk set with the program theme and a nice selection of period music. Very enjoyable.

Well, thought I would mention that this series is back on PBS. I might have thought after so many seasons it would be packing it in.

Now I'm happy to say it is still hitting home with its dramatization of the Nonatus House story, now in the mid 60s. Churchill's funeral gets featured, and Jenny Agutter and others continue to play admirable characters.

Rather uplifting in a time (now) that is making some of us very fearful.

I also find that the style of beauty popular in those years particularly appealing at this point in my life. My heart melts when I see and hear Valerie Dyer.

I think I'd buy the set, if there was an all-seasons collection

Watched the second episode today. Something introduced in the first episode has not yet been developed - the city is going to tear down Nonnatus House as part of slum clearance...

Just noticed this while Googling - The real-life Nonnatus House is now in Birmingham – and the likes of Chummy and Sister Evangelina are nowhere to be seen – but the seven remaining nuns of this small Anglican order are relishing their new-found fame.Feb 16, 2012
