My suggestion is to start with 1985's Misplaced Childhood. I think its their best work.

Agree. And I would say Script for a Jesters Tear would be a good second disc to get. A lot of people compare this disc to Genesis. So if you don't like Genesis you may not like it.

    I have. I love it.

It's hilarious, because I've been a major Dream Theater fan for several years and their work just OOZES Marillion love. When I first heard Misplaced Childhood I thought "this sound just like 1992 Dream Theater!"

I then had to slap myself and remind myself that DT copied Marillion, not the other way around, lol. Even their early album art is very Marillion. :)

I like how Pseudo-Silk Kimono and Kayleigh are linked at the start of Misplaced Childhood. Much better than listening to Kayleigh as a separate single.
And I think Incommunicado sounds remarkably like early-70's Who. One of my fave Marillion songs.

"Kayleigh" for sure, followed by "Lavender." But Misplaced Childhood as a whole is just a perfect album.

I'm no expert on the Hogarth era as I've only heard the first two albums with him, but I do like the song "No One Can" (or as it's called on the US version, "No One Can Take You Away From Me")."Hooks In You" is good, too.

In addition to the classic Kayleigh, Lavender, Warm wet circles, sugar mice, etc, I would check Afraid of Sunlight, Out of this world, This strange engine, Under the sun, The invisible man, Ocean cloud, Neverland... It is impossible to pick only one!

I think the best way to get into Marillion is by record. Best albums probably Misplaced and Clutching from the Fish period, and Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and Marbles from the Hoghart one.

Latter day Marillion's best song is IMHO The Invisible Man. I love the studio version on Marbles but by jolly, live it is a monster. Like this live recording where was in the audience and the atmosphere was amazing:
