Had the Ogden mono forever, since its cheaper days. Always been told, and also read here, it was a separate mix, but never saw anything about alternate song edits or other undisputable differences, just the stereo being "clearer" or the mono having "greater impact" and things like that. Found this (almost decent) lilac label stereo yesterday and by mimicking a fold using the mono button tried to compare the both. Maybe my ears are getting older or I miss something, but the only difference I can hear is the mono is cut a bit louder.

So if any of you here have better ears or in other ways knows exactly what would differ a true mono from a fold, please help.

What makes it even more complicated for me is there seems to be two early matrix variations for side one.

    a) IMSP 012 1Y
    b) IMSP 012 1Y-2

Question is if those two differ in any way - a) was made parallel to the mono and b) contains some kind of later remake - which one should you compare with to decide?

After listening closely again I've found a few places where the balance differs between the two which actually shows on a different mix. So maybe I shoud have done that before starting the thread (blushing). But if anyone can point out altering edits or explain the exact differences between the two stereo versions I'm still here :)

One thing that I don't like about the mono mix is that Marriott's voice often seems to be a bit buried, most notably on "Afterglow". I do recall a few odd flourishes in the mono mix that I don't think were present in the stereo, such as a little percussion bit in "Rene" after the bridge (following "She'll have yours. . ."). I'm pretty sure that this is a dedicated mono mix, not a fold down.

In the grand scheme of things - no! It's still a classic. But when it comes to mono-stereo/matrixes/issues/record DNA and things like that I'm an anorak. Always been and finding out stuff about it makes me happy... :)

Thanks for the "Rene" bit - I'll check it. I've also come to the conclusion it is a separate mix which is great.
Just knowing that makes the mono a lot more enjoyable to me.

I had the white label mono LP for years and eBayed it away. Don't miss it. Yet Marriott's vocals are so buried in the mix. I still have an US Immediate LP and a million CD versions. Just Kidding. Wish the LP had been better mixed.

Agree in a way. Had the mono for so long I got attached to it. But after listening closely to the stereo for two days now I'm starting to appreciate that more. Same heavy impact still clearer and with more prominent vocals may make it an even better choice.

Had time to listen now. You're right the drums in that "Rene" part sounds different - mono also has hits on the cymbal (plus cow bell?) not on the stereo.

Exactly what I was looking for :)

    Thanks again!

I love this album. I wish it could be remixed. I don't really like the stereo or mono mix of Ogden's. I'd probably prefer the mono if Steve's voice was louder.

Though I've had and liked the mono forever I always thought it was cut a little too loud and thick. This stereo I found now surprises me by having the same impact but a tiny bit softer at the edges which actually makes it a better listening. I don't remember that at all from my earlier stereo copies. Could there be a difference between lilac first matrixes and those pink label ending with -2? Seen such claims on the net, but can't confirm it by ear.

I need to find a nice early UK of the stereo. Mine is an American and it's pretty crappy. I have a lilac mono.

Lilac mono seems to be the most valuable, but at least here in Sweden the lilac stereo is a lot rarer. In fact the copy shown here is only the second I've seen in r/l for a decade. Just luck finding it in a $10 bin. The vinyl here looks pretty crappy too, but plays totally OK so it'll be my keeper for now.

Wishing You best of luck in finding Yours :)

Just received a copy of this from a seller on Discogs (only owned the CD prior). It just arrived and is supposed to be the new RSD issue but there is now SF or RSD sticker anywhere nor does it say 2015 that I can see. How could I tell if it is the new 2015 RSD issue? It does have 2012 on it though.
    Thanks

The thing about the stereo mix: absolutely horrid balance. Drums all on one side for a bunch of tracks, and even when collapsed to mono, it really misses the impact that was well-inscribed on the mono LP. However, the stereo has some cool phasing effects as well, and is an enjoyable listen.

I've got an original UK Stereo LP, and I love it. But I really need to get a mono. I was considering the 2015 RSD LP, but it seems to go for about what the originals in "pretty darn good" shape go for, so ... How is the sound on the new pressing? NR-ed like the CDs?

Which stereo mix are you comparing the mono with? There are at least two, the original UK mix and a U.S. one. The recent box set from 2012 didn't contain the alternate American mix, just the UK one.

Also, there was a reissue of this record with a rare "silver cover" on Daffodil Records sometime in the '70s or early '80s. I have a copy. I'm pretty sure this is the UK stereo mix. Or is it yet another variation? Maybe an expert can let me know for sure. I can't check this second since my copy of the original British stereo mix now resides at my ex's house. Anyway, here is the Discogs link if anyone wants to see the silver cover.

I have an original UK and an original US LP. I never even listen to the US one: it's in much worse shape, and is significantly less clear than the UK LP (I would assume due to tape dupe things?). Honestly couldn't tell a mix difference between the two, (actually, maybe that's what I've sensed as a lack of clarity for so long ...) but IMO the UK is just far better in all regards. (Spinning it right now, and "AT FULL VOLUME"! )

The 2012 Deluxe Set that I have has (almost) an entire CD of full of "Alternate USA Mix"es. They're awful, again IMO. The best digital version this far is a rip of a minty UK stereo LP, although I'd love to get one of the MONO!

Is there a good current CD source for the mono mix of the album? Or an older CD that wouldn't be too pricey? I'm after "Lazy Sunday", which is the rarer single mix (not the same as the other mono mix on Sanctuary's "Singles Collection"!).

I have the "Komplete Kollection" version of the album from the mid 80's. Would this be from an analog source?
