I'm not absolutely certain of this but it looks like he didn't play the Liszt, substituting the Schumann Fantasy instead. He changed another program which was originally to have included Hindemith and Szymanowski.

I don't agree that styles are always particularly tied to certain times. Some artists are much more identifiable by a style that is tied to a specific time than others

He also cooked up some of the most belligerently dissonant compositions in the history of Western music. I suspect he had his moods.

  6. Daedalus

Daedalus I haven't heard it all.....

A nice quiet Saturday morning-working through some of the Bernstein Concertos and Orchestral big box. Tchaikovsky up right now. I wish I had purchased the Bernstein Symphony box as well before the price escalated. Later today the Furtwangler big box will be re-explored with some of the Bruno Walter tossed in for good measure. Ah and maybe some Reiner and Monteux. Nice to have a lazy day!

Sony? How much material did Arrau record for Columbia and/or RCA?

More Arrau recordings surface all the time. It will be interesting to see what SONY turns up. They sure did right by Richter fans.

Now we need a Univeral set for Arrau. I'd LOVE that!!

Now listening to "Sarasate," music of Pablo De Sarasate performed by Julia Fischer with Milana Chernyavska on piano. On Decca.

A lovely way to spend a lovely afternoon.

  18. A request for help please - thought I'd ask here rather than start aseparate thread.

I'm trying to track down a recording of Scubert's Winterreise (the entire cycle) performed in English.

I've got plenty of translations of course but I can't seem to find an actual recording and my google-fu is letting me down.

Does anyone here know of or can you please recommend any such recording.

    Many thanks!

    Best Wishes,
    David

As a cat lover, this set is worth it for the cover alone. Arrau's majestic playing isn't bad, either. :)

If I recall correctly, they recorded the 6th shortly after the horrifying school attack in Beslan, Russia.

Festivo was the Philips budget line, but the press quality was excellent ...

Looks like you are a fan of Julia Fischer as well. I have most of her recordings and like her a lot more than I do Hilary Hahn ...

Now playing the following CD, which just arrived from MDT today for a first listen. I am enjoying the music played on my living room rig since my wife is not around to compete for the space ...
