I got notification earlier today that my favorite local band, Janel & Anthony have a gig tomorrow. They're opening for Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up who I have limited expose to. The line up of that band looks very nice, Tomas Fujiwara on drums, Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Mary Halvorson on guitar, Michael Formanek on bass Brian Settles on tenor saxophone. Listening to tracks on his home page it sounds very nice.

    :righton:

You will dig that very much I believe! Mine has some really solid album on Three Blind Mice and East Wind as well.

Time now for a heapin' helpin' of Fender Rhodes-dominated funkiness:

Hysear Don Walker - Complete Expressions Vol. 2

Earlier I listened to the only album I have that Fujiwara plays on, actually 3/5 of the quintet playing tomorrow night, Mary Halvorson, Michael Formanek, Tomas Fujiwara: Thumbscrew. Looking forward to the show. It should be great

Such a great record. Was the first time Lacy and Waldron played together?

Sounds great, but the CD is too much for me. Allmusic says there's a 2015 CD release in 2 weeks. Hopefully that's true. I don't see it listed anywhere else.

I will join the Tiny Grimes party also. On the turn table: Tiny Grimes - Callin The Blues. Ray Braynt is great on this even if he sounds a little more modern the rest of the players.

It's sold out right now but I got 'em for $18 each.

I just found vol 1 and vol 2 on 1 disc at CD Japan that came out this week. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/CDSOL-5818

Looking at it some more. I'm not sure what it is. They have two of his albums Complete Expressions, Vol. 1 and Complete Expressions Vol. 2+1. Same price and release date so the one I linked, 2+1, I have to assume is vol 2. No idea what the +1 is about

The +1 is just a bonus track on Vol. 2. They don't have a single CD that collects these although they easily could because the first one isn't even 30 minutes! I love Rhodes-heavy albums so I had to have both. I would have to give the edge to Vol. 2 for the fact that the tunes and covers are stronger. I dig both though! :D

Speaking of something more modern. On the TT: Dave Holland - Conference of the Birds.

Aside from the title track it took me a long time to get into this one. I now think Four Winds is amazing. I still have a ways to go to love it but i am getting there. I think the warmth of the vinyl for this helps compared to the cd, it's probably more just that I am more open to this now than I was when I had the cd the first time I tried.

Bought CD this for a buck at the local library about a month ago knowing nothing about it but the pedigrees of the musicians. Such great driving music, hasn't even made it in the house. At 62 at the time of the recording (1985), "Bags" is still in total command. What's most unusual, and captivating, is the dual-soprano lineup of Heath and Vick on several selections. No huge surprises or showy solos, just great, straight-ahead jazz from guys who complement each other beautifully.
