I have a living room, dining room, a kitchen, 2 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms. Where else would I have my system set-up? o_O

Of course. Did you imagine I'd stream music like a common peasant?

I've only used Nakamichi and Sony for CDPs so far, but those old Technics are attractive. The old 199? Nak, I'd have to go into storage to find the model number, is built very sturdy with a majority of metal parts like you say. For a medium sized unit I think it weighed in at about 20 lbs. The SCD-1 is the heaviest player I've seen so far at 58 lbs.

I can remember Nakamichi players being high-end back in the day. I never owned one myself. In fact, they were so exclusive regular shops didn't even stock them.

In my living room I have only an iPod with a Bose Soundock. No disc player there, but I don't do any serious listening in the living room.

However, I have a finished basement-level that I've dubbed "The Listening Room" much to my wife's bemusement. I've got a universal disc player in my setup, but I must admit I have not regularly listened to CDs in a while. I'm on a real record kick the last few months so I've been listening to mostly vinyl.

In my music collection room, I have a CD player and a turntable. The CD player gets the most use. For the kitchen and living room, BOSE bluetooth speaker + Spotify.

  7. I have a Rotel RCC1055 player in the living room. I don't use it that often but it's spinning right now .... :)

My Linn is in the living room, along with all my music. Along with nine bookshelves stacked with books that - get this - have been read. :D

Seriously though, I do all of my serious listening in the living room.

Family room: CD & cassette - 75/25. (Wife's Sony stereo space)

Computer room/Den: Wife plays downloads & CDs - 75/25 . I never play music on the computer. Sounds really good though, Altec Lansing speakers with sub.

A friend of mine in the know -- seriously -- told me once that physically heavy early models of audio components are usually the longest lasting. They're usually right off the production line's first run before they switch over to less expensive lighter parts thereafter. I can't remember the reasons for any of this but it's true for my components that fit the bill. My circa '99 or 2000 Technics DVD-Audio Disc player weighs a ton -- that's actually how the subject came up between my friend and I to begin with. Anyway, it's a monster still goin' strong. Wish it had some new playmates, though. ELP next month ...

I have 2 Technics players. The one you quoted and a 1987 model (SL-P1000. There's a picture of it a few pages back). Both are heavy and beautifully made. Especially the 1000. Being as these players have never given me the slightest bit of trouble, it's fair to say your friend is probably right!

Another sign of a well made player is the CD tray/drawer. I've had some really poor, creaky, flimsy pieces of crap over the years, but the 2 aforementioned machines have strong drawers that are quiet and smooth.

My Oppo is in (what passes for) our living room, but I use it mainly for DVDs, SACDs and Blu-Rays and to stream music from my Mac. That said, I listened to the new Umphrey's McGee album in it yesterday and it does see regular, if infrequent, use as a CD player so I voted yes.

I'm using my 18 year old Panasonic A101 DVD player presently, I believe it has separate DVD and CD lasers, the DVD gave up after 8-10 years use. I have one of those MASH players from about 1997 but I didn't like the sound, it was kinda lifeless compared with the failing Denon DCD1500 mkIV it was supposed to replace.
I still have the MASH player perhaps I'll pull it out of the closet and try it again.

I have an SACD player (and a few other devices) in my living room, and although I've been listening to my ripped files lately, I still use it from time to time.

I pretty much stream my music to my living room and bedroom from the computer in my office. My living room set up is 5.1 surround and that's where my Denon DVD-1940 is hooked up. I'll sometimes play a DVD but mostly use it to play SACD's and especially those with surround sound layers. Works well for my taste, budget and old ears!

Only thing that plays music in the living room is a ipod/dock. 99 per cent of listening happens in the mancave, which is cool with me. In the cave there are 9 devices that will play a cd.

That's all I use. Two 300-disc CD changers fed into my receiver.
