Piper is a fantastic album, but Roger Waters has said before (paraphrasing here) Pink Floyd could not have started without Syd, but it couldn't have gone on with Syd.

Last time I looked at my copy of Piper at the Gates of Dawn it was credited to Pink Floyd. One of the cool things about following a band is enjoying the evolution. Piper was a legendary debut album. Although he left the group after one record, Syd Barrett's influence lingered in the band for the rest of its run. Whether it is in the highly experimental found object art school early stuff, the themes of madness and alienation in the middle period, or the nostalgic live tributes to Syd in the later years. It makes perfect sense for it to be a fan favorite along with another title that bookends what you like about the bands trajectory. For me that would be Piper to Meddle. Pink Floyd's Paleozoic Era

Totally false. It's my favorite because it has more variety than the post-Dark Side albums after Roger Waters took over and stuck almost exclusively to one tempo.

I'd rather be caught dead than have TPATGOD as my favourite Floyd album.

Who gives a **** if that makes me a true fan or not.

  7. Piper has more variety? Don't open up an ice cream shop, my friend. 31 flavors of vanilla isn't likely to go well.

Definitely more varied tempos than most of their post-Dark Side albums. After that one, they seemed to have concentrated on one groove. Mostly plodding stoned-out comfortably numb largo.

PatGoD isn't my favourite Floyd album, as I'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite. I've loved everything the band has released in the 40+ years I've been listening to them.
But to say that one is not a fan if it is their favourite and that it's essentially a Syd Barrett solo album with "hired musicians"? I think you insulted your own intelligence there my friend....

  10. No, Syd was a deity. Let's not forget. Books were written about the one-album-wonder, for God's sake! There is no room for human frailty at the gates of mighty Olympus.

Or look, I'm not trying to be argumentative, per se. I've tried to get into Piper for 25 years. I just had a listen two night ago and I still couldn't stand half of it.

It reminds me of when I was in high school and somebody older than us clamied that Roger Waters wrote The Wall and The Final Cut while in a mental institution. It sounded plausible, and we went with it. It heightened the musical experience because it was great to listen to music written by a crazy person. Several years later, after reading a book, I found out that it wasn't true. Yet, it still made the music that much more exciting. I'm just saying that's the same way people view Syd. It's great to be in love with a tragic hero.

I am only speaking for me, but I voted true. Piper is my fav Floyd album and I am not a true fan of the group. The post-Syd Floyd has held no interest for me. I've heard it, liked some/didn't like some, but they never grabbed me until I heard Piper and that's the only album I ever listen to anymore. I could be just fine going the rest of my life never hearing Dark Side or The Wall again, but I'd sure hate that to be true for the Syd stuff.

However, if someone claims to be a true Floyd fan, they are, regardless of which album is their fav.
