I think Kiss, in general, would qualify. As a matter of fact, I would imagine they would be the first to admit it (if they haven't already)!

I'll always remember that commercial was the first time I'd ever heard the song.

So in that regard it was not such a bad thing. :)

That was NOT why she chose that cover.

Not everything Yoko does is supposed to provide haters with easy ammunition.

How about Rod Evans from Deep Purple? I lifted this from wikipedia...

In 1980 he was approached by a management company which specialised in questionably-reformed bands with well-known names, and he began to tour under the Deep Purple name accompanied by unknown session musicians. The line up was Rod Evans (vocals), Tony Flynn (guitar), Tom de Rivera (bass), Geoff Emery (keyboards), and Dick Jurgens III (drums), son of famous big band leader Dick Henrey Jurgens.[7]

After several shows ended in near riots,[8] Evans was sued by the management of the real Deep Purple and they were awarded damages of US$672,000. As a result of the lawsuit, Evans no longer receives royalties from the band's first three albums.[8]

Why? Sting had some ok stuff. Both are very talented artists. I think Paul Simon made a good choice.
At a time when concerts have become quite cost prohibitive and aren't drawing in the massive crowds they once did artists teaming up to get a mix of fans of each as well as fans of both is a good strategy, and Sting and Mr Simon are a good match, although a bit unexpected.

Certainly not the most shameless cash-in, but here's Status Quo's followup single to Pictures of Matchstick Men:

    Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

At least at a certain point (up to the end of the 80's) the industry was run by music fans that gave the artists room to create...

Elton John had a hit in 1984 with "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", he quickly got in touch with the Sassoon Designer Jeans company to use it in a commercial.

An excellent songwriter. Disney Girls and the Grammy award winning I Write The Songs are among my all time favorites. He has been doing vocals since California Girls, and was the one who played Pet Sounds for Lennon and McCartney.
I prefer Bruce over Love as long as Mike flaps his lips between singing.
