I lived most of my life in Philly, and for years had it hammered into my brain that JEOPARDY came before WHEEL OF FORTUNE. Most TV affiliates in the States that air one of these, air both, and usually back to back. As it happens, in Orlando, the ABC affiliate there runs them in that same order, JEOPARDY at 7 PM and WHEEL OF FORTUNE at 7:30 PM. But in Tampa, the shows are on the CBS affiliate and are reversed with WHEEL OF FORTUNE coming first at 7 and JEOPARDY following at 7:30. So which is more common? How does your local affiliate air these two shows? Harry
They are syndicated together---to air one, you have to buy/air both. Here, Jeopardy first, then Wheel.
In January 1985, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune were seen together for the first time here in Los Angeles. 1985-1989: WOF then J! on KCOP-TV 1989-1992: WOF then J! on KCBS-TV 1992-Present: J! then WOF on KABC-TV
That's so weird. A Philly native myself, I would feel so "off" by that. Akin to going out about my day, without having taken my morning dump.
Here I have Jeopardy on one channel at 6:00 PM (with a repeat of last season at 5PM), then Wheel on a different channel at 6:30. Even after 30 years it's still a habit.
In the Central time zone, it's highly uncommon for them to air together. Remember, prime time starts at 7 pm here, but most stations have 6 pm newscasts, so that leaves room for only one half-hour syndicated show in between, at 6:30. Here in Oklahoma City, they don't even air on the same station: Jeopardy! is at 3:30 on the NBC station, and Wheel is on at 6:30 on the ABC affiliate.
Here in my area of the Central Time Zone, Jeopardy airs at 4 and 4:30 PM and then WOF airs at 6:30 PM. They both air on the CBS affiliate.
In Birmingham the CBS station airs back-to-back episodes of Jeopardy (one rerun, one new) at 3 pm, then the ABC station airs Wheel at 6:30 pm.
Neither show belongs to a "network", but rather are syndicated. This any network affiliate - or even independent station - can pay for the rights to these shows. What has happened in the past is that some station group might sign a deal for other shows, which allows other stations in those markets to pick up the two shows. That happened in Tampa. For years, the two had aired in tandem on Tampa's ABC WFTS 28. About two years ago, that station decided to go with local news and another game show from 7 to 8, so they relinquished the rights to the two games. WTSP, the CBS affiliate, picked them up and airs them from 7 to 8 with WHEEL first. Harry
