The album became the first in history to have seven commercial singles peak within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. It is also the only album to achieve number one hits in three separate calendar years.
The album has been critically cited to influence various musical trends and has inspired artists such as Lady Gaga, Sleigh Bells, and Rihanna,Kylie Minogue in addition to Robyn, Bok Bok, and Britney Spears.

Favorite album for me would be "Janet" but as far as singles go, she never topped the exuberance of "Nasty." Never really got into "Rhythm Nation" though, once you take away the uniforms and iconography it never seemed like there was much left, IMHO.

She almost betrayed the Jackson saga by letting former The Time personnel to produce her. Control has Minneapolis all over the place. It was like Prince letting Quincy Jones to arrange Kiss.

Come on, no love for Herb Alpert's "Diamonds"? The video alone is pure gold VHS quality comedy ...

Control and What Have You Done For Me Lately, for me.

I think others like Rhythm Nation and Velvet Rope may have sold better, and are preferred by Rolling Stone, but I find Control less sprawling. Each to their own....

Tough decision as far as the single choice goes, she had several really good ones - Nasty/Got 'till It's Gone/All Nite (Don't Stop)/Love Will Never Do/Go Deep/Miss You Much/Together Again, would all be contenders for me.

Velvet Rope is Rolling Stone's little darling. :p They included that in the greatest albums of all time list when in actuality Control deserves that spot.

What about her Rock debut "Black Cat"? An unlikely #1. Or the middle eastern influenced "Runaway"? :)

I totally forgot all about Runaway due to it not being on a studio album. Same for The Best Things In Life Are Free, another contender that one.

Was never that fussed about Black Cat to be honest. Preferred What'll I Do when it comes to rockier Janet.

My favorite Janet "rock" tune is "What About" from "The Velvet Rope", but I don't recall that being released as a single. Perhaps I'm mistaken on that?

Anyway, I'd love Janet to explore that side a bit more on any future recordings...

Always liked What Have You Done For Me Lately.
Also like the Eddie Murphy stand up routine for 1987's Raw that quotes the song.

I guess I'm the only one on this message board that enjoys her post-blacklist singles. It's a shame they went unnoticed.

My favorite Janet Jackson song. The chorus sounds like it was Joni Mitchell influenced. (Big Yellow Taxi) 0:41-1:08

 Damita Jo *sigh* ....Criminally underrated.
Imo, it's her last great album. C'mon, it features some of the best songs of her career like Slolove,Truly and A outstanding Kanye West produced single that somehow went under the radar...
