When did Paul McCartney's Höfner bass made its come-back on stage with him?

Wow, that's crazy that he put throwing that iconic bass to his roadie in as part of the show! It did look pre-planned, but I saw him earlier that same year and he didn't do it.

I think instruments like the Hofner mean more to the fans than to the musicians. If one of us owned that bass, we'd have it behind glass and insured for a million bucks! :)

Welcome to the forum, Peter! I've read about your story over the years. Amazing stuff.

I think your profile pic wins the prize, btw. Love it.

No doubt about that. It made me immediately think that it couldn't be the same bass, but I guess it was. You could hear the gasp from the crowd through the applause.

The old bass sound mostly had to do with recording/playback limitations rather than the Hofner. They have a unique sound, but it is actually very useable.

For a more modern recording, check out wilco's handshake drugs, the bassist is playing a vintage Hofner club bass.

I've always thought he doesn't play Silly Love Songs because Linda's no longer here. Quite apart from being the subject of the song (as of many at the time), her singing part is quite central to the song.

Very true. Billy Gibbons apparently has a setup that can make any guitar he plugs into his rig sound like his old standby "Pearly Gates" Gibson Les Paul.

When did we see the last (hopefully not final) sign of the Rickenbacker 4001? "All the best"-cover 1987?

I found this. All The Best promo performance, 1988. I have no idea if it's the last time he used it on stage though.

    Thanks a lot!

Driving Rain booklet mentions the Rickenbacker, but I'm not sure which track it refers to.

That was great. Thank you. Haven't seen that in years. Not only the Beatle bass in his studio, but the EMI stuido light for the cover of New. It's all there, isn't it?

You can see Paul's Rickenbacker just behind Paul, sticking up on my profile picture.
    Yes, it's a heavy guitar.

I have one of them also, that T-40 is like wearing a 15lb weight.
The Rickenbacker is just as heavy as a Fender, I play both of them all the time.
My Hofner '63 reissue is super light and sounds incredible, I love it. I see why Macca plays it all the time.

I remember reading about his Rickenbacker where he had it sent back to the factory when the pickups failed.

Small scale hollow basses sound fantastic. He could use it when he does simply because they are a big beefy sounding bass and they finger nicely.

Speaking of short scale hollow body basses.....

What would have happened if Mark Dronge (of Guild Guitars) handed Paul a Starfire II Bass instead of giving John that Starfire XII 12-string in 1966.
Those are some incredible sounding basses.
