Number one for me. Staggering how underappreciated it was when it came out. Even now it just doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Its a major piece of work by a major artist.

Wholeheartedly agree! I was flicking through some old reviews the other day, they were moaning about the lyrics etc. (Same as with Common One). They just don't get it! They don't have that "real soul" eh? :)

It's very close between it and Astral Weeks, but Astral Weeks just tops it for me. The two of them are closely followed by Moondance and so on, he's got so many great records though. If you dig him that is...if you don't, you might think it's boring, but those who know, know! haha

    Very strong indeed.

But then I listen to side 2 and am equally (almost) impressed with the quality of the songs....not as 'heavy' but still very compelling musically.

Gary Numan's Dance is great too. Two long (both over 9 minutes) completely undanceable tracks sandwich two of his best pop songs.

Indeed, the point of separating the sides into "The Black" (1) and "The Red" (2) was so that they could divide the heavier, faster songs into one side, with the more mellow, at times spacey material on the other.

They're both stunning, but very different.

And maybe also so they could have their own custom labels.
