Rock songs with eastern flavour. Songs with sitar or tambura. Not Coral sitar guitar, real sitar. And tablas.

The guitar playing a note on every beat. Nobody does this anymore.

There's probably better-known examples of this 1960s (and early 70s) phenomenon, but this is the only one I can think of at present...the Moments'"Love On A Two-Way Street":

That "sitar like" guitar sound used on lots of 70s soul records by the Chi-Lites, Stylistics etc

Not a 'cliche' but a sound: I will always love the sounds of a Roland TR-808 however dated it makes a song. Particularly on the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions of the 1980s.

a really obvious one, but it's rarely heard these days, a clean guitar sound through a valve amp.

I, too love that fake late 80s/early 90s "cowbell" sound. It's got a certain type of charm to it. Like it's not trying to replace a cowbell. It's got it's own thing going on. Or should I say "thang".

Before I knew that the Monkees didn't play on about half of their records, I thought Mike Nesmith was referring to his own guitar solo with that "play, magic fingers" bit. At ten years old, I thought that was clever as all hell...
