Wow! All those bands had top 40 hit singles!? That's especially impressive for Fripp / Eno considering they never released any singles.

(People should really read what this thread is about before they just randomly reel off the name of anybody who's ever recorded in more than two configurations.)

I don't think he's been mentioned yet, but Bootsy Collins had #1 R&B singles with James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band (and a #1 US Dance single guesting on Deee-Lite's 'Groove Is in the Heart').

And Bernard Sumner (Joy Division, New Order, Electronic) is a no-brainer that I think might have been missed.

Hmmm, this is hard to track down. RIAA shows the debut album went platinum, I'd say on the strength of
    "Rock the Nation"
    "Bad Motor Scooter"
    "Space Station #5"
    "Rock Candy"
which were hits. On the other hand, I don't see a Top 40 hit out of those, although I didn't research exhaustively. So (like some other entries here) it may not meet the OPs criteria if we hold to that strictly.

I think this shows how counting duets as separate acts quickly gets ridiculous. A solo artist doesn't suddenly lose or change their identity when they record a duet, and you can easily find plenty of serial duettists who were never in bands that would qualify (Marvin Gaye is a screamingly obvious example: duet hits with four different partners - though these were, at least, ongoing parallel careers for him, not just novelty one-offs). If you're clutching at straws to include your beloved Bowie in a club where he really doesn't belong, then the first straw you should clutch at is Tin Machine, who - believe it or not - actually did manage a top 40 single in the UK. And if you're determined to count every hit collaboration, however dubious, you really shouldn't discriminate against Bing Crosby and Pat Metheny like that.

Actually, if you're going to count every duet and collaboration as a separate group, then you should probably just give up and hand over the crown to Kanye West, who as far as I can tell has had top 40 US R&B hits in nearly forty different permutations, either as the top-billed artist plus guest stars ("Kanye West featuring X. Y, or Jay-Z") or as the featured guest star of some other act (e.g. "DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince featuring Joanie, Chachi and Kanye West"). In the later category there are more than seventy different singles listed on wikipedia, and twenty of them were hits. But just between you and me, I don't think Kanye West has really been in more than 100 bands.

Yeah...maybe take out the one off duets and make it that they have to do an entire album.

Yes well I never anticipated the Kanye West (serial) duets artist syndrome. That certainly wasn't my intention for this thread. I was just thinking of people like John Lennon who once had a hit duet. Lets face it there aren't that many people that have been in 3 hit bands with either a top 40 single or gold album. I thought the thread might get a little more mileage if we included duets. I've happily never heard Kanye West or any of his 70 duets. So it never did occur to me. Either way I can only think of a few more hat trick or people. How many more can there be.
