I don't know why she would. Ireland is the second biggest of the British Isles.

Already mentioned (but only once, strangely)... but my fave "obviously British" singer is Billy Bragg. I love singing along (and quite loudly) to his songs practicing my own (fake) east London/Essex/kinda Cockney/whatever accent.

One of the most obvious to me is David Bowie with his "Anthony Newley" inspired vocal on his first album. I haven't listened to Anthony Newleys stuff but presumably this is very British sounding too?

George Formby also deserves a mention but the previously mentioned Noel Coward may well be the winner?

That would be Alain Jourgensen on Ministry's first album - With Sympathy.
And he's from the midwest. USA. Had never been to the UK. Nor had his parents. The accent was fake, which the label liked. Made him sound more British, which was where all the best New Wave was coming from at the time. Hhoow - Hhoowhowoooo!

    No David Bowie?

    Jim Noir

    Johnny Rotten

An interesting, related thread might be the most American sounding British artists.

There aren't many people from the Irish Republic who would consider themselves British!

They still come from the British Isles whether they like it or not. Although in this context we should perhaps be using the term Atlantic Arcipelago as it is more politically correct.

    You're absolutely right. Geez... :(
My mistake, the remark between brackets was for Tom Jones and not for John Cale. To be honest I mentioned these two gentlemen because they're Welsh.

Dunno if someone mentioned him... Jon Anderson (Yes) he has a strong northern accent.

You can close this thread; here is Mike Skinner of The Streets! :)

(as non-native speaker I'm however not able to tell where his accent is exactly coming from )
