It charted in the Billboard Top 40 for eight weeks, peaking at #12 on 11/27/65, so there were many of us who wouldn't agree with you.

From Way Out West (1966); she cops the Manfred Mann arrangement, but can't make the song sound even remotely lascivious, IMO.

Melanie's version of Lay, Lady, Lay (switched to the first person) takes some beating in the badness stakes.

It is actually from a pretty decent album. I remember liking this about 10 years ago before being familiar with the original. That extremely cheesy video doesn't help though.

the yardbirds doing "most likely you'll go your way" always sounded pretty awkward to me....

For me personally its Rod Stewart's Forever Young. Rod's solution to everything, make it into a cheesy sounding pop song.

I like Dylan's version of Watchtower a lot better then the Hendrix version and I know many who do. Sometimes less is more.

Note: Dylan's live versions and remakes of his own tunes don't count, nor do intentional parodies like Lennon's Serve Yourself[/QUOTE]

    "Serve Yourself"?

That would be under a "Best" Dylan cover thread! Much better than Dylan's horrendous trite "Gotta Serve Somebody".

As to the actual worst, I would go with Odetta's "Blowing In The Wind". I have it on a collection and I don't think I've ever made it through the whole song without skipping ahead. Played that CD at a social gathering once and forgot the song was there and had to do much apologizing for the minute or so my guests were forced to listen to it!

I do agree that Shatner's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Sebastian Cabot's "It Ain't Me Babe" are awful as well!

Could not disagree more. I much prefer Rod's version.

I like the Beach Boys version of The times... and I also don't mind Cher's Dylan covers at all- so far the worst have been the Steve Howe and Ke$ha ones

    The winning post has arrived....

David Gilmour - Like a Rolling Stone (1983).

I'm about as big of a David Gilmour/Pink Floyd fan as they come. But there is simply no excuse for this travesty. And to think, he considered releasing this recording as a single!

  22. In defense of Odetta's Dylan interpretation, has she ever done anything listenable?

True. But by Hendrix' lofty standards, it's downright abysmal.
Had I not known it was a cover, I would have assumed "My Back Pages" was an Eric Johnson original given the degree to which he's personalized it with his breezy vocals and fluid guitar work.

The worst one I can think of is Dave Matthews Band covering All Along the Watchtower on the (generally pretty good) Chimes of Freedom benefit album for Amnesty International:
