I t might sound simple, and perhaps I am missing an obvious trick, but I cannot tighten the screw that connects the headshell of my Acoustic Research Legend turntable to the tone arm, consequently it is free to move, making a nonsense of critical adjustments. I could glue it,making it a fixed headshell, but that sounds both drastic and prone to error,or perhaps find a hobby shop that may have a small enough tap and die set to rebore the tube...any other tips that may help?

Which tonearm is on the turntable? Is it the Linn Basik? I will help you sort this out. You are correct in that we cannot have your headshell moving around. That's not acceptable.

I think it is the straight Jelco arm Arden...no marks I can see to identify the make/model of the arm:)

In my case ordering special headshell screws helped getting my SUMIKO EVO III tight to that new THORENS TP 90 tonearm. Before it just never sat straigh + tight while playing.. Used the one's that came with the pre-mounted AT 95/THORENS cart. I thought they ll would have the same size/width but that was not the case. Phone needledoctor or any other supplier if that could be the solution to your problem. Cheap but worked like a charme !

That head shell would not fit my arm(the "pin" would prevent that): besides, there is nothing wrong with the head shell,it is the screw/bore of the housing that the head shell fits into that is the problem:)

Upload your photo to photobucket.com or imgur.com or another image hosting site.

You then need the url or link to the picture. Use the "direct" link

If it's definitely not cracked then that's good news.

Could you paint a layer of black nail varnish into the thread (in the arm hole, obviously), let it dry, repeat, let that dry, repeat etc. then try screwing the bolt into that, so it cuts a thread through the new, hard varnish? Might be enough to hold it if you're careful, and if it doesn't work, a little nail varnish remover would get you back no worse than where you are right now.
