I'm with John Fell...after the first two albums comes By Your Side and, for me, Lions (yes, I said Lions!). I like bits of the rest, and almost nothing after Lions.

Whether that puts them through a "narrow prism" or not, more listening isn't going to change my mind. In fact, it sets my view in stone.

Lions is a terrific album in my view. Not all the tracks, but enough to hold it together.

Please. With or without Luther, all post-1997 renditions of The Black Crowes paled in comparison to the MFF era. Even the best version of the the BC without Marc (the lineup with Audley & Sven - assembled for the small club tour to promote By Your Side) couldn`t get close.

    Crowes should just hire Jagger.

I think the first three albums are great (esp Southern Harmony and Amorica) and really like their mid to late 90's live stuff. After that, it's hit or miss. The live album that they recorded at Levon's was pretty decent, but I think they tried to gravitate too much towards the Greatful Dead side of the spectrum which didn't suit them....at least for my tastes.

I saw them a few times from 2001-2013. Was always generally a solid show but I never caught a blow away performance. They came through the Austin area several times and were never the cheapest ticket, and I was always very maybe so maybe not about seeing them again. A few years from now, when they cut the crap and get back together again, I expect to see tickets on sale and I'll probably still be on the fence about going.

I agree with you actually. They were awesome.

I'm just sayin Luther was badass and those shows were fun. The most recent shows being my favorites comment is based on a lot of things outside the band's performances also. Like having good seats, or not being too wasted to enjoy it etc.

Love Neal.... hate the over the top psychedelia (just not my thing)... and he hasn't grown or progressed musically in 3 - 4 years despite all the touring...

I really hate that the Crowes might possibly never play again after the 2013 cash grab debacle. Such a terrible way to end such an incredible band. 1992-1998 (yes I said '98) they were the best band around. They had great moments after that, but failing to breathe new life into the 2005 reunion was ultimately their downfall. You can only hire so many fill-ins before you lose the plot altogether.

Couldn't agree more with this post. The longer the 2005/2006 tour went on, the more it became clear that new material was needed.

Keeping the setlists fresh was easy to begin with by playing new covers, b-sides and previously unreleased material but it seemed odd that, if they were a 'band' again, nothing new was coming.

Over that period the only completely new tracks were Its All For You once in 2005, and a handful of others in 2006 (Magic Rooster Blues, Takes One To Know One, Cold Boy Smile) but for me, they're not too much to write home about.

That said, they were on fire from May 2005 until March 2006. The summer 2006 U.S. tour had its moments (particularly the very lengthy jams before Thorn) but overall things were getting tired. The signs of disharmony were there as early as January 2006 when Eddie was a no-show for a gig. And then of course later that year another Crowes chapter closed. It was never the same after that.....

Ok, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Eddie didn't 'no-show' for that Hard Rock Cafe gig in Orlando, January 2006.

He was escorted out of the venue by security.

Really? I didn't know that. The story I heard was a bit more sensationalist than that, but could be completely false (such as it is with stories ...).

But why would he need to be removed by security?

Either way, Eddie was as essential to that band as any other member.

Eddie was the glue, even moreso than MFF.

I can't discuss on an open forum exactly what happened, but it led directly to his exit after the summer tour of 06..

Lost Crowes (especially Band) are as essential as anything else.

WAY better than Lions or Warpaint.

Tall got shelved because Rich didn't like it.

Band got shelved because Sony music bought Def American and wanted the multi-platinum band of SYMM-yore.

Not many people have heard the album recorded as a 5piece in late 97, after Band but before BYS. IT'S SICK. Sony freaked and hired John Kalodener, who brought in Caveman Shirley...and he ruined the album.

The original version of Young Man Old Man was called Old Man & The Midnight Sea, and it was AMAZING. Exit, different than any Exit ever...Bled To Death...Baby...the 1st version of Cosmic Friend...Every Little Bit Counts...PASTORAL.

It's a shame what happened to those songs through BYS and Lions. Paint An 8 got a musical vasectomy, replete with cheesy lyrics and cellphone sound effects on Lions, the giant turd called Come On. The worst Crowes song ever may actually be Ozone Mama, There's Gold in them Hills, or the Lions B-side Sleepyheads...

That band constantly shot themselves in the foot - repeatedly.

    They were habitual foot shooters.

I was in the 3 london shows for the first "reunion" and was amazing!!!Marc was on fire and the set list were incredible!!!
I was in a couple of gigs with luther (two amsterdan shows) and were really good
The last two concert I saw from the band in brussels and was a little bit dissapointed, two nights and the two set list were pretty much for fetivals
