john lennonist There ONCE was a NOTE, PURE and EASY...

"The White Album" and "Layla" were the first two to come to mind.

Of course there're dozens (or hundreds) of others I could list given a bit o'time.

There are so many books like the 1,000 recordings you should hear before you die kind of thing and top 500 albums of all time etc.. I don't always agree with those but often they point to a whole new genre or artist that will really open up your listening world so in that they are valuable. I can't reply right now with my own list cause my brain would explode. This can turn out be a nice learning thread. Thanks.

I know what I like. I don't care if anyone else owns them.

The one that came to mind when I saw the thread title, and still the only one I would say is universal that everyone should own, is Miles Davis Kind of Blue.

It isn't even my favorite of his albums, but I would say that it is required listening for every person owning recorded music.

I think some of you take these threads too literally and tend to miss the spirit of the topic. It's just an opportunity to talk about some of your favorite music. I doubt anyone really thinks their pick would appeal to everyone.

I agree with you. But many listeners are not attuned to improvisation at all. KOB might be a struggle for them, as would listening to extended guitar solos as per Hendrix.

No, I just don't pontificate on what albums I think other people should own. I really don't care.

Nothing against the OP. I just don't feel the need to push what I like on others. I'm not posting out of anger or trying to threadcrap.

THANK YOU! It's just a fun learning experience for me. I am young (21) and was not alive when much of the great music came out. My dad is a music fanatic and I grew up listening mostly to classic rock and jazz but I only have his recommendations. I like learning about others' favorite albums so I can expand my horizons.

A lot of us come here to have fun and talk about the music we love. Sometimes along the way, we get turned on to some amazing music we had no idea was out there, and sometimes we (hopefully) return the favor. That's pretty much what this place is about, at least for me. You've got the right attitude, hope you find some new horizons...

I don't think anyone "must own" anything. People can like what they like, just like any other art form.
