You may define "smart" any way you wish....but would love to know what movies were popular for those who perhaps didnt enjoy slapstick and goofy comedies of the period. Dr. Strangelove comes to mind. Recommendations are welcome.

One, Two, Three James Cagney's last film before going into a 20 year retirement. A bit dated because it's set in Cold War Berlin but fast-paced and hilarious. Costar Horst Bucholz was about the only actor Cagney detested and wanted to punch out

It's been a long, long time since I saw The Wrong Box, but I recall it being quite funny (if somewhat silly in a British way). And that cast . . . And any script co-written by Larry Gelbart has something going for it.

If you people don't mention Dr. Strangelove, then you'll have to answer to the Coca Cola Company.

What a great film! The best part was the parents wearing the Groucho glasses and Virgil being put into 'Solitary Confinement' for a month with an Insurance salesman. At the end of the month, the salesman was still talking, only with his sleeves rolled up and his tie loosened.

CHARADE would have to be high up there on any list of such films - some would call it a comedy/drama, but it has too many good one liners in it to be described as that. Get the Criterion version for the director/writer commentary, which is also very entertaining.

I'd recommend The Knack and HEAD.
