I've just checked the list of Sun Ra albums ad CDs I have (118) of which 54 or so are live...not to mention the 16 Miles Davis ones.

    Think I'll pass.

Lots of jazz live albums and a lot by Zappa, Grateful Dead, Phish, King Crimson and some of the rock albums mentioned in the first post. Too many to list.

I've got a bunch...but one that was mentioned in the first post (All Night Long...Sammy Hagar) is by far my favorite. His band was really tight back in those days building an audience one show at a time opening for Boston and others. To me that album is everything a live album should be. It has great energy - a great set list - and live cuts that improve over the studio versions of the songs. Another key is its length - as a single LP it's just right.

I've got about 15 linear feet of Grateful Dead alone, and that doesn't even touch King Crimson, which is packaged in a less linear fashion.

In other words, it's not just Made in Japan, You Can't Do that on Stage Anymore, Vol 2, Pictures at an Exhibition, or the 500 live jazz and classical releases. Frankly, it's an unrealistic question, unless one hates live music, in which case, I'd ask whether one actually likes music. Music was made to be experienced live. Some notable studio works are, of course, the exception.
