    The Smashing Pumpkins, 'For Martha'

'If you have to go don't say goodbye
If you have to go don't you cry
If you have to go I will get by
Someday I'll follow you and see you on the other side'

Billy Corgan wrote this song about his mother passing away, I can imagine this might be one of the saddest things that can happen in life. I think his father played guitar on it.

A new one to me. Love it! I love bouncy songs about terminal depression! :)

"Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" is a gloriously sad song, even when performed by John Travolta.

When it comes to sad songs, first artist I'd mention is John Frusciante. He wrote so many sad songs, but at the same time they are so beautiful. (same thing with Robert Wyatt)
    Little taster:

    Further on, I go with:
Leonard Cohen - If It Be Your Will
David Bowie - Rock 'n' Roll With Me / We Are The Dead (two consecutive songs on "Diamond Dogs", that could be Bowie's sadness peak)
Peter Gabriel - Home Sweet Home / San Jacinto
Pink Floyd - If / Vera Lynn
    Beth Gibbons (Portishead) - Mysteries

And finally, the album "Tilt" by Scott Walker. Make sure you make an appointment with your therapist BEFORE listening to it.

I think it all goes with what personally resonates with you. Chris Isaak's "Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing" came out the week that baby did a bad, bad thing in my life.

Same band but "The Eternal" and "Decades" always get me.

OMD's tribute to JD is also heartbreaking, "Statues".

    Roger Whittaker - Why

    Something is going wrong
With the singer and the song
And the music isn't gentle anymore
There's a mist across the moon
And the suns too hot at noon
And the house is dark behind the broken door
Where the flowers used to grow
With their leaves are hanging low
And the constant shadow lies across the floor
There's a strange and empty sky
Where the wild birds used to fly
And I never tasted bitter rain before
And will the grass be gone from underneath the sky
Will the golden flower wither soon and die
Will the fire burn out the land
And the sea fill-up with sand
Will the last word ever spoken be why?
Will the last word ever spoken be why?
    Someones lost the plan
    For the brotherhood of man
And no ones trying to find it anymore
And the winds become a sigh
For those who hate and those who die
And the waves are black and slow along the shore
And will the grass be gone from underneath the sky
Will the golden flower wither soon and die
Will the fire burn out the land
And the sea fill-up with sand
Will the last word ever spoken be why?
Will the last word ever spoken be why, why, why?
Will the last word ever spoken be. Why?

Aphex Twin "Matchsticks", to me this is the soundtrack to the cold loneliness of interstellar space.
